Laptop to run Resolve under Linux

PostSat Nov 27, 2021 6:53 pm

Hello everyone.

I have a hard time to find any recommendations on what laptop to get that can run Resolve under Linux or guidelines for hardware that supports that.

Any recommendation for me and others in my situation?

I've had good luck with an Asus ROG Zephyrus G14. Small but surprisingly fast.

The one with the best Nvidia GPU equipped with the largest amount of VRAM available. Nvidia is a must (AMD GPUs are good under MacOS but are the PITA otherwise). 8 GB VRAM is the absolute minimum, look for 12+ GB VRAM.

As soon as you get a laptop fitted with Nvidia GPU 8+ GB VRAM, you will probably get both a decent CPU and 32+ GB RAM and a pair of NVME SSDs included by default.

Also ensure it has a Mux Switch.

Have you actually seen a difference with lack of MUX? My understanding was it would only have negative impact with large amounts of PCIe traffic, eg games running at 144fps. Tests have shown games that run at 30fps will have no impact of MUX or not.

I haven't seen anyone test it in resolve, so I am interested to know.

Linux drivers support would be my biggest concern. If you expect the onboard sound and headphone jack to work, or if you are fine using a DAC.

Jarrod's Tech runs the resolve benchmark on all the machines he tests

https://www.youtube.com/c/JarrodsTech

he also usually try's a Ubuntu live disk to see what is noticeably broken.

Hi.

Last month Intel introduced its new Desktop Alder Lake CPU's. It is produced on the new smaller Intel 7 process node instead of the previous used 14 nm process node. Early next year will we se the first mobile 'higher-end SKUs will allegedly feature six P-cores coupled with eight E-cores. So, Alder Lake-P will max out at 14 cores with 20 threads'

From: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel ... w-shipping

For now will the Desktop Alder Lake Cpu's run faster on Windows 11 with its new scheduler.
'To date they have not posted any Thread Director patches for the Linux kernel,' But they are working it. And until it arrive can you just disable the E-cores.

You can run Alder Lake on windows 10 just fine. There is not a significant performance difference in many applications. Some are even faster on 12th gen on Windows 10

https://www.techspot.com/review/2358-in ... benchmark/

Puget showed resolve on Intel 11th gen and AMD is worse in Win 11 vs 10

https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/artic ... ting-2236/

I don't think they have tested intel 12th gen yet.

This is really all moot as no 12th gen mobile chips are announced yet. And as the power requirements for 12th are much higher than 11th, 12th gen could well need to be quite castrated to work in a laptop.

Hi.

I agree that the Power requirement for the desktop Alder Lake is higher than I expected. My personal opinion is that Intel decided to turn up for the power consumption, to get higher benchmarks than the top Ryzen CPUs.
The Power to Performance curve is not linear. To get the last 5% of performance, you maybe need to increase the power consumption with 25%.

The mobile Adler Lake-P CPU's don't have any competition. It is the only 14 core CPU able to run Linux.
It is produced on the Intel 7 process node with bigger power efficiently than Intels previous 14 nm generation.
I don't expect any mobile CPU from AMD with more than 8 cores before 2023.

And Intel Alder Lake-P Mobile CPUs is Now Shipping To OEM Customers

To be clear, the Top intel mobile is expected to be 8P + 8E, the 14 Core you refer to is 6E + 8E. The 8P might be only later in 2022.

But we will have to wait until after the Jan release to get any official benchmarks.

Will also have to wait to see if they keep DDR4 or we are forced into high cost of DDR5 on mobile. Resolve does seem to benefit from DDR5, at least on desktop.

https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/artic ... ries-2247/

But it really depends on your workload. My 3080 16gb laptop is bottle necked by the GPU in all my exports, the 5800h only runs at 30% load

So if your jobs are GPU limited, CPU doesn't matter

But if you are doing lots of fusion, then CPU is king;

Am I correct in my assumptions about the relevance of these nice graphs to desktop CPU&GPU setup only?

Yes, no laptop 12th gen intel chips have even been announced yet. The announcement is expected in Jan.

Puget Systems sells desktops, so they never do laptop benchmarks. Their tool is the defacto resolve standard benchmark though and can be run on anything (not yet M1 Mac).

Jarod's Tech on YT is great about doing laptop benchmarks with the Puget Resolve Benchmark. So I will look forward to him publishing results in Feb maybe?

Thank you all for your recommendations. I was unsure if the driver NVIDIA provides for Linux would be up to the task but your recommendations cleared that up for me.

On Linux I have right the same proprietary NVidia driver as elsewhere, note my signature, works without a glitch
