Nothing happens when trying to render

PostMon Sep 27, 2021 5:04 pm

Hi all, I have installed Davinci 17, I imported a simple video that needed resizing (MP4), resized it and added to render queue. Nothing is happening. Also with quick export the time just increases and render fps stays at 0. Pretty disappointed so far. Would anyone be able to shed some light on why I am unable to render a simple 5 minute video ? TIA.

Sounds like a setup problem. Have a look at the section entitled Delivering Content in the BM training videos. Though it features version 15 it is still relevant.

Hi thanks for the reply, not being rude, but in order to import a simple video and export I have to watch a 27 minute video ?

You might not have to watch a 27-minute video, but you should read the manual.

Here's some questions: Which hardware (CPU, GPU, RAM, disk I/O speed)? What specific version of Resolve? What OS? What source material? What timeline resolution? What framerate? How does your drive rate with Blackmagic Speed Test? Which GPU drivers are installed? What format are you trying to render to?

Note that MP4 is only a container, not a codec. Assuming it's H.264, note that this can be very resource-intensive to work with in post, because it's a highly-compressed format.

How did you resize the video?

Do you have Playback -> Timeline Proxy Mode set to Half or Quarter? If so, set it to None and try again.

If that doesn't help, show some screenshots of what you're doing on Edit, and give the system specs asked for.

Hi thanks for the replies, I will check them out, I have imported a ten second video it is still climbing over an hour and not seeming to stop. I will let you know what happens after the changes you guys mentioned.

It is a VR ready laptop, I have never experienced anything quite as bad as this with video editors before. I have come from Adobe Premiere.

The CPU is Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7820HK CPU @ 2.90GHz 2.90 GHz
The GPU is NVIDIA 1080ti
The ram is 32.0 GB

RE speed test no idea I cannot find the download link ( I looked on the support page) but given I create mixed reality and virtual reality applications on this device with zero issues, and the fact that never experienced this with other editors, I am guessing it is not an issue with the device.

Yes I am using H.264, never had this issue with Adobe.

Not sure why I would need to resize it. Timeline proxy set to off.

Other issues, when you cancel a render it becomes unresponsive, you have to completely close the application and open it again.

If the forum allowed uploading screenshots I would.

This software clearly has serious issues, I have tried yet another 20 second clip and it is still climbing at 12:34:01, never experienced anything like ths but if this is the functionality with just rendering a 20 second clip I am definitey not going to bother with anything more advanced. Complete waste of time.

I installed Olive, the same video I mentioned in the last comment, rendered in about 5 seconds.

Olive is far better than Resolve and has much more functionality. Cheaper than Premiere too.
And, oh, so stable ;-)

Seriously, if you just need to scale a clip, use Shutter Encoder. It's free and reliable.
Using Resolve for that purpose is like mounting a big truck to go around the corner for a sandwich.
For comparison: my laptop takes 25 seconds to rescale 3 minutes of video in Resolve.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

It seems to have less features though looking for more transitions etc. I actually need something for more advanced projects and was really excited about resolve, but the initial test and not being able to even export a twenty second video has ended that excitement. Do you know where you can get more transitions etc for olive?

I don't care for transitions. Resolve is running fine on my Macs and I only use two or three transitions anyway.

This is what is bugging me I develop VR, Mixed Reality and AI on my laptop, it is a VR ready laptop that can crunch, I cannot understand why I am having these issues, I complete removed resolve, I will try download again. Do you think Windows 11 could be playing up with it?

GPU drivers are very critical for Resolve and Windows has a tendency to change them behind your back.

Exactly the same again after a completely fresh install. Currently 30:06:05:04 and climbing rendering a 1 minute video nothing special just import and render.

Install original drivers from the manufacturer, not the Windows ones.
And try to disable your iGPU.

The drivers are official NVIDIA drivers, again, Resolve is the only software having issues. I am monitoring in task manager it isn't even touching the GPU, no usage but the counter is still climbing. Talk about banging your head against a brick wall lol

Removed NVIDIA drivers, download the latest from their website, installed.... absolutely no difference. Going to go back to Adobe, this is insane, cannot even export a one minute video, months of this issue ad no resolution yet. Resolve is **** sorry lol

If installing and setting up resolve then taking some time to read the manuals is too much then I strongly recommend any one of the far simpler NLE/grading packages on the market.

Resove is a product more geared towards the needs of professionals for whom the investment in time and effort is more than recouped by the extra power, efficiency and performance that the product delivers in the hands of someone who is somewhat less impatient.

It's horses for courses.

Very true, Resolve is not for everyone.
Filmora might be helpful if you don't want to pay Adobe's shareholders forever.

Impatient? This post is three months old, and as of yet despite reading the documentation, looking at all the other posts where they have the same issue, I am still unable to simply import a video and export it without any modifications, I hardly think that is impatient.
