Is there any way to deal with vertical scratches in video?

PostWed Dec 01, 2021 2:04 am

I primarily use Resolve for dust busting, but old film frequently has intermittent defects that persist across many frames, often while moving. Vertical scratches are the example that come to mind.

Does DaVinci Resolve Studio offer any efficient (not-frame-by-frame) tool for fixing such defects?

I'll take that as a tentative "No." Bummer.

While there are a few tools left in Resolve, for serious restoration work you'll need specialised software like Diamant (which lives to its name and doesn't come cheap).
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

In addition to Diament (from HS-Art), Algosoft, MTI Film, and Pixel Farm all make widely-used film restoration software that can handle vertical scratches:

http://www.hs-art.com/html/products/diamant.html
http://www.mtifilm.com
http://www.thepixelfarm.co.uk/product.p ... Id=PFClean

Be aware that these software packages are costly and very complex. They do great work, but there is a learning curve and some take a lot of time to analyze and fix bad film damage. It's not a "set it and forget it" process.

Resolve's Restoration tools (like Dust Removal) can do miracles under the right circumstances, and sometimes Patch Replacer can do a better job with bigger problems. And at least the Resolve tools are very simple and straightforward.

Thank you for your response. I am familiar with some of the tools you mentioned.

I have a decent amount of experience using DustBuster+ (by HS-Art) as well as PFClean. Minimal experience with MTI Nova, and zero experience using Algosoft. Do you have experience using the latter? I am interested in hearing your and anyone else's take on how Algosoft stacks up to the others.

What does Diamant run? IIRC, DustBuster+ was around $6-$8k as of a year or two ago.

I have a tiny (very tiny) bit of experience with MTI DRS Nova, but that's it. Given the low cost of Resolve, what it does for the money is a miracle. But vertical scratches are tough.
