Will an external video card help playback performance?

PostWed Dec 08, 2021 11:14 pm

Hello!

I am currently having playback issues in Resolve 17.4.2 when in Dual Screen mode with a 2nd monitor. The only solve that works is lowering my resolution way down on the second monitor, leaving me to believe my GPU isn't powerful enough. My footage is proxy linked to 4K DCI 16x9 ProRes 422, so playback should not be an issue. I can play back everything fine in Quicktime or in Single Screen mode.

My computer specs are:

I am considering purchasing a Sonnet Radeon RX 5500XT eGPU Breakaway Puck with 4 GB GDDR6 VRAM to power the external monitor: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/ ... ml/reviews

Just wanted to check and see if folks think this piece of hardware will do the trick, and if by any chance someone has experience using the Puck with Resolve.

Thanks!

The answer is no. Blackmagic support confirmed only one GPU can be used at a time, unless they are of the same make and model.

Well, not exactly. The Studio version can use more than one GPU, but the VRAM will not add up.
So, with only 4 GB in either one, you can't work in 4K/UHD. If you want to stay on MacOS, it's time for a M1.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Studio 18.6.6, MacOS 13.6.6, 2017 iMac, 32 GB, Radeon Pro 580
MacBook M1 Pro, 16 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM and iPhone 15 Pro
Speed Editor, UltraStudio Monitor 3G
