DaVinci start faster as Admin

PostThu Jan 06, 2022 6:03 pm

Hi!
I have Windows 11 Home 64Bit 21H2 (Build 22000.376) with all officially offered updates (i.e. those that are offered automatically).
DaVinci Resolve 17.4.3 starts faster when I run it as administrator!
If I call DaVinci as a normal user, the SplachScreen appears, then everything is displayed up to the project settings and then nothing happens for up to 1 minute ... (regardless of whether the program is called immediately after starting the PC or at some point on Day for the 1st or Xth time).
If I start DaVinci as an administrator, it takes less than 3 seconds until work is possible after the splash screen.

Does anyone have any idea what could cause this delay or how I can fix it without starting DaVinci as admin?
Regards
Oliver

Do you have any antivirus running?
Maybe AI can help you. Or make you obsolete.

No - only Windows Defender and there I excluded both the EXE and the directory.

The starting behavior (duration) does not change even if I deactivate the Defender!
DaVinci "hangs" every time in the project settings - only when I start DaVinci as admin does it run without a hang.

You might have a path specified somewhere in the preferences that points to a folder where you don’t have full access. Like the root of a drive.

For your information - I contacted the support about this and they generally advise starting DaVinci as Admin ...
Please be aware that we advise you to run Resolve on an admin account on your system as Resolve is a system intensive application and requires alot of control of your system.

Basically, I wouldn't care if it weren't for the behavior with Drag&Drop - this is prevented by Windows - unless you use a file explorer that is also run as admin....

I don't buy that explanation from the BMD support. Blackmagic specifically changed Resolve a few versions back to make it possible to run effectively on Windows PCs with multiple accounts since it's so important in an educational environment for example.

What is "interesting" is that every time there is an update of the NVIDIA Studio driver, DaVinci somehow hangs when starting ... As soon as there is another update from DaVinci, everything works fine again...
I seem to have fixed the behavior. I started DaVinci as admin and reset all paths in the settings, deleted all projects, imported them again, reset all paths there and also deleted all cache files beforehand. Now DaVinci also starts as a user (with admin rights) as quickly as when I run it "as admin". Will see how long that lasts.

By the way, I have the same behavior (hanging in the project settings) on a Windows 10 PC after there was an update of the NVIDIA Studio driver ....
Here, too, DaVinci helps to start as admin. or to delete all caches again, delete the projects and import them again... (which I don't do on this PC now...)

BlackMagix Support replied that they didn't see anything unusual in my protocols and log files and that I was the only user who reported this behavior.
So if others have a similar behavior - please contact the support and click on my ticket: Support #MIX-631-45889

To go to "Will see how long this lasts." to answer ... Exactly 1 project long! When starting as a user for the second project, DaVinci had the well-known "hang" when loading the project setting.
After completing (delivering) the project, I can of course export the project itself, delete it in DaVinci and then also delete all cache files by hand - then the "hang" when loading the project settings is much shorter but still significantly longer than if I used DaVinci as Start Admin. Am I really the only one seeing this?
