Previewing First/Last Frame of Transition?

PostFri Mar 04, 2022 10:44 pm

When adjusting the length of transitions, is there a way to choose what is previewed in the viewer?

In the image below, while adjusting the right edge of the transition I’d like a preview of the last frame of Clip1 (green clip) in the viewer to see where I want that clip to end, but currently it shows a preview of Clip2 (blue clip).

Thanks.

I couldn't find a way. You may just have to experiment. Or do the math.

You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Thanks for looking for a solution Jim. The only thing I have come up with is moving the first clip to a top track, extending it out to see where I want it to end, then moving it back down and making minor adjustments to the transition from there. Of course, moving the clip to a new track deletes the transition (this is a major issue I have with Resolve) so I have to copy the transition before moving the clip and then paste the transition back when I move the clip back down.

Ideally, they could provide a few options for what to view when editing transitions. There is a lot of blank space at the top of the viewer, perfect location for a dropdown button to select what is shown in the preview while editing cuts, transitions and Trim Edit Mode. It would be great to have the four screen viewer from the Trim Edit Mode as an option for editing transitions too. I love the four screen viewer.

Thanks again.

If you have an asymmetric transition, by copying/pasting the transition you are losing the asymmetry.

I think it's a bit easier to extend the first clip to see where you want to end, then move the playhead there to have it as reference point, hit ctrl+z to undo the extension of the clip, extend the transition to the playhead

Thanks for the heads up panos_mts. I don't plan on using any centered/asymmetrical transitions as I'm not a fan of them. I'll only be adding transitions at the start or end of a clip, then I can preview at least one edge of a transition while editing and I'll have to use this method for the other edge.

I've been using the I/O markers to keep track of both transition edges to line them back up again. This all feels very hacky and it's incredibly slow editing like this, but it works......eventually. lol

Except for clip Trims, the results are identical. And Center Alignment is typically just easier to work with.

The most efficient method here is to find the proper In/Out points for the clips when adding them to the timeline, taking transitions into account. So if you want a 12 frame transition, set your Out point 6 frames back of the last frame you want to see.

Trimming/editing the clips is what I was referring to when I said I wasn't a fan of centered transitions, I know they are all visually identical. With transitions on one of the edges I can at least preview one edge of the transition while editing it, which makes things a little easier. If I used centered transitions I wouldn't be able to preview either edge and I'd have to use the hacky method to see both edges.

I don't know ahead of time what transition length I am going to use and I'm always readjusting transition lengths and shapes to get the timing and effect that I want when viewing it in context.

I am working on a detailed feature request post covering a few of my top editing issues I've come across and how to fix them. This issue will be included and I hope they'll be able to address it in a future update.

Thanks again.

No, the preview is the same for Centered. That's what I tested earlier.

What I mean is that with a transition aligned to the right of a cut, I can select the cut itself (both edges turn green) on the left side of the transition and move the cut around while seeing a preview of the cut in the viewer. Since the cut is located at the edge of the transition, it's a way to preview that one edge of the transition. This method doesn't work for the other edge of the transition, since there is no cut at the other edge that I can preview.

If I were to select the cut itself and move it with the transition aligned at the center, I would only see a preview of the center point of the transition not one of the edges. With the transition centered I wouldn't be able to easily see a preview of either edge of the transition.
