v18 object magic mask - slow clap for the BM devs

PostMon May 16, 2022 4:37 pm

This object magic mask in v18 is blowing my mind. The depth map is pretty amazing but somehow the magic mask crushes it. The video clip below was masked along the bodies and the foreground rocks in less than 10 minutes including all cleanup. It would have taken days by roto and color picking would have yielded just okay results. This mask was perfect and didn't even require any finesse. So a huge kudos to the BM team for making such an amazing tool.

A couple small issues (looking the gift horse in the mouth): Sometimes the + dropper actually removes swaths of selected area, seemingly randomly and across various colors. The track forward / backward button only works when DR thinks there is something to track and not when the user wants to force a re-track (typically due to adding + or - strokes.) These are really the only issues I've found. I'm really blown away by this tool.

There is a special form for version 18.

Is this good for removing an unwanted object in a shot and replacing with missing background or only for isolating an object from the background . My buddy tells me that he can do incredible things in Premiere removing things.

This is what this tool is for, creating masks. What you do with the mask is then up to you.

The Mandolorienne is blown away too, so much she's starting to disintegrate, thought that wasn't allowed.

Good Luck

@Leonardo, not automatically. Think of it as a automatically-rotoscoped matte. You have to take additional actions to do something with the matte once you have it (effects, color grading, etc.).

Note separate threads pointing out painful issues with losing the mask during a workflow since the tracking data is currently stored in the cache.
