SRT file not working...?

PostFri Oct 02, 2020 1:50 pm

I am using the newest-but-one release of Resolve 16 but having issues with subtitles.

When I export a video with subtitles as a seperate file I am getting a sepearte SRT file but then it is blank / doesn't show up when selected in VLC or WIndows 10 default Film & TV player.

How do I make this SRT file work or check that it will work on video hosting??

Does your timeline show the subtitle objects?

Is the eye icon switched on?

When you right click on the subtitle track's header and export that track as an SRT file, does it work?

Having the same problem here.

Does your timeline show the subtitle objects?

- Yes

Is the eye icon switched on?

-Yes.

When you right click on the subtitle track's header and export that track as an SRT file, does it work?

-No and yes. It does export, but when VLC reads the .srt, it is empty.

i figured out the issue. the issue is that the captions are being exported starting at 01:00:00:00 when they should be starting at 00:00:00:00. there doesnt seem to be any way to control this setting in the export. so we are all screwed until they fix this. hopefully they fix it soon, its taken the last 5 days of my life trying to get this work. unbelievably frustrating that there is no solution other than going in and changing all of the time code by hand.

Mine is, yes. I'd never noticed this before, just assumed it was the defualt and meant something. Why is it like that? How do I change it? Thanks.

– You can set it when you create a new timeline
– You can change it in Media Page, select the timeline, right click and then Timeline/timecode start (not sure about translation)
– You can set a default timeline start in "Preferences/User/Editing/start timecode

good to know about the timeline workaround...unfortunately this doesn't fix my problem, as the distributor specified that the captions need to begin at 0 in order to submit to platforms like hulu etc. luckily i had another workaround through the captioning service software.

i really really hope they change this soon... its pretty crazy that the captions export at a different setting than the timeline settings. it would also be very helpful to be able control the caption start time in the export for those of us who need to export captions starting at 0.

thanks again for your help!

Thank you so much for saving me a lot of frustration in trying to figure out why my subs were not showing up in the media player.

Given you haven't posted your real problem it would help if you can detail the issue particularly given there were improvements in v18.

Thanks Peter,

If I want to export .srt and subtitles start at 10:00:00:00 the .srt don't have the good TimeCode.
But If I move everything at 00:00:00:00 in my Timeline everything is sync except de minus 10H.

I'm on Resolve 17
M1 Mac
can't install 18 Beta for now.

If I start at 00 here's the result

1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:06,214
Précédemment

2

When working in 23.976, there is a discrepancy between the file's timecode (which is not real time in 23.976) and SRT's timestamps (which is realtime).

So when you export a SRT from a timeline starting at TC 10:00:00:00, the corresponding timestamp in the SRT is going to be 10 hours + 0.1% which is 36 seconds more than 10 hours. So the timestamp of a subtitle at TC 10:00:00:00 is going to be written "10:00:36.000" in the SRT file.

Since SRT is a very loose standard, it's hard to say what we should do or what we shouldn't, but I personally always deliver final SRTs starting at 00:00:00.000 because that is what the majority of players require. If the SRT is not meant for delivery but instead meant to be a work file, then I leave it at whatever the timeline start is so that it loads at the correct TC in the NLE.

Make sense? I do hope a better file format gets adopted in the future.

I FINALLY FOUND THE SOLUTION !!!!

Go to Media pool, select Timeline, Right Click, Then Go to Timeline > Starting Timecode and set it from 01:00:00:00 to 00:00:00:00, And then Export it however you like...

Thank you :D
