Delivery Render Issues

PostSat May 14, 2022 9:38 pm

Afternoon peoples. Having an issue with my rendering. Have been A / B'ing Resolve/Premiere for a couple of days and for the life of me I cannot get Resolve to render with better quality than Premiere. Running the free version of Resolve. Just can't justify the $300 cost if the quality isn't where I need to be.

This is mainly for my Youtube Gaming stuff/channel. When A/B'ing both renders side by side on Youtube at as close to the same settings as possible Resolve just has a slightly washed-out look. My original settings were as below:

Source:
OBS:
Encoder @ H265 (AMD AMF)
Output @ 1920 x 1080
Preset @ Quality
Rate Control Method @ CQP 10 (I- Frame and P-Frame)
Keyframe @ 2.0

Most output files are in the 200-250 Mbps file range. And look amazing. Might be overkill but my system can handle it.

Resolve:
Export Video:
Quicktime
H.265
Custom @ 2560 x 1440 (for youtube vp09 codec)
60 fps
Restrict @ 90Mbps-120Mbps

Advanced: (Only Changes)
Force Resizing to highest quality
Force debayer to highest quality

When using Quicktime @ H.265 file output bitrates are really small. They were larger before I can swear. Now, this is game stuff. Say Borderlands 2, a game with a lot of motion, particle effects etc prerender will be average 225Mbps - 250Mpbs average bitrate, post-render in Quicktime @ H.265 will only be like 20-25Mbps bitrate. Even with the upscale to 1440 for vp09 being applied to 1080p it just looks washed compared to Adobe Premiere. So not sure if it's a color range issue. or something else.

So at the moment not sure, I'm feeding Resolve a ton of data. With Quicktime / H.265 renders seem to be way too small and bitrate is being just killed. Then further killed by Youtube compression. Using mp4 bitrate sizes are an average 90Mbps-95Mbps. So that's where I'm at. Now most people watching might not notice it but I do and it just irks me.

If It's not clear feel free to ask. Other than that. Any ideas?

What OS are you monitoring the result on?
Which browser or player?

Chome, VLC for local playback. VLC as well shows a slight washout of clarity. Just not understanding why Quicktime H.265 would be rendering bitrates of only average 20-25Mbps. I'd be assuming with a restrict of 90-120 Mbps on a source file master bitrate of 250Mbps Advanced settings set to max etc it would actually be using as much of a bitrate as possible or close to the restrict rate.

is the issue clarity.. i.e resolution due to compression, or wash out, i.e gamma or color space differences?

try rendering into a non compressed format to see which if its not clear.

Try to render into Cineform (large) and compress with Handbrake. If it looks better, it’s the compression.
If not, it might be a video vs studio range issue. Check the settings for your input in the Clip Attributes and for your render. Don’t leave them on Auto, but set the same setting manually.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

I'm going to do a fresh set of renders just to make sure I'm not crazy.

Don't have the Cineform codec installed, I'll need to look into that.

It should always be there with DR, both on PC or Mac.
You can try DNxHR in one of the better flavours.

After a new batch of renders still see a slight difference between Resolve / Premiere. The Premiere renders have a slightly deeper color.

Ended up doing a Cineform ----> Handbrake Render...

Was shocked at how huge the Cineform Bitrate was. An 11-minute file was 900Mpbs. After Handbrake render it was about 70Mbps. So almost the same as Premiere HEVC h.265. After uploading it to Youtube and letting it process. After doing an A/B Premiere has better color depth, much warmer. Where Resolve to my eye seems lighter and not as clear. So not sure if Resolve is expecting me to work in different colorspace may be to achieve the same result. As well as not sure why in Resolve there's a slight clarity issue after render. Remember I'm not an editor lol. THanks in advance.
