Will Davinci Resolve versions 15 and 16 work with Windows 8.1?

Not supported. There are installation requirements on the page to download it. For Windows, only Windows 10 is supported.

Not supported, but it should work. W7 does, including 16 betas, without issue.

Use at your own risk. You’re on your own for whatever bizarre problems you encounter.

Care to name any bizarre consequences? I have no interest in promoting non-standard OS's, but I've been running Resolve since the first 12 betas, and haven't encountered a single Win7-specific anomaly, other than some export and format limitations. A defunct operating system has the other advantage that updates won't render it suddenly inoperative.

FYI
Win 10 with all updates worked fine from 12 to 15 for me. Also only running Windows Defender & Malware Bytes.

My desktop with Windows 8.1 runs Resolve 16 Beta 4 without any problems. I only use it to edit and color correct videos.

V16 is only expected to run on W10. There are a number of dependancies on items included in W10.

If you decide to use and older OS version please expect you will find some issues.

I did not delete OpenCL.dll. I do not have a GPU. I am using the free version of Resolve.

You must have some kind of GPU, or Resolve wouldn't run at all.

This is very unfortunate that Windows 8.1 is no longer supported. Not sure if anyone can chime in if they're using Resolve 17 without issues on Windows 8.1?

They also won't protect it from vulnerabilities that may not have been discovered yet when they went out of support but which hackers would be quite content to leverage.

I would suggest that depending on just how old the OS is, you may want to keep it off the internet.

Well, Peter, when the atrocious "free upgrade" to Windows 10 first came out, it almost destroyed my workstation. Needless to say, Windows 10 left a bad taste in my mouth. :)

This is my experience too: 12 - 17. What little render speed bumps might occur are difficult to measure much less attribute to an OS update.

Clean your mouth. Get a second boot drive. Install windows 10. Do all updates and install Resolve. Disable Windows Updates and everything else using https://www.oo-software.com/shutup10 except for background apps, internet indicator, camera and microphone.

Get https://www.fssdev.com/products/caspersecure/ and a "Seagate 5TB Backup Slim" from Amazon and configure daily backups.

Exclude everything Resolve accesses from Windows Defender realtime protection. (media, cache, etc).

Do Windows updates only when you have time to deal with things and potential restore last days backup.

That's how I do it for my production workstation.

I gather this doesn't actually work now, but never mind. I guess it's a start.

Though unsupported by BMD, Win7 and (presumably) 8.1 will run all versions of Resolve free or Studio up to 16.2.x, with some limitations on export of h.264/5 formats. For 17, it's Win10 or nothing.

It works for me, but I'm also using the enterprise version. I guess OOSU will figure a new method for other versions if that changed.

What also works is to just set your network connection as metered. That should prevent Windows from pulling anything.

I'm STILL using 8.1 running Free Version 18 beta... just in case anyone is curious.
Was thinking about buying studio but now I am not so sure. I actually found this thread looking to see if I could use Speed Editor with the usb dongle on my system.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated

Thanks George for that info! It's nice to see that 8.1 can still run version 18. I'll have to try that out. No idea about whether Speed Editor will work with your system's USB dongle; hopefully someone can provide info on that.

I don't mean to be insulting, but are you sure? There are Resolve hacks going around which might make this sort of thing possible, but unmodified? It absolutely won't work with Win7, short of Resolve modifications, and Win8.1 is a close cousin to 7.

I've used Free Resolve16 for a while.. just upgraded to R18 last week, downloaded from blackmagic site.

I may (it was a while ago) have had to update the .dil file as mentioned in the link above.. but as far as I can tell it works fine. I just wish I had more info re: dongle/Speed Editor. Don't want to make an expensive error. Nor update my system.
