RED on Mac Studio Ultra excruciatingly slow

PostThu May 26, 2022 9:34 am

Hi, I bought onto Apple's narrative and got a maxed-out Mac Studio Ultra: It performs great in benchmarks but not so good in real grading workflows.

I'm grading Sony Venice, Alexa, Blackmagic and Prores somehow fine...
But RED kills it: There is a tremendous lag in the interface, that may become unresponsive for seconds.
I have to generate optimised media but in the end it renders at less than 1fps when full-debayering. CPU and GPU usage are very low (BTW there's always GPU usage, even when idle, ard. 20%)

I've also gotten renders with repeated frames -but to the extend the 16:9 version would have a frame repeated but another render in 4:5aspect ratio would be fine.

Anyone else experiencing this behaviours?
Honestly, Resolve is very unstable and unreliable with this machine... Working in latest Resolve 17.4.6 studio.

I can work smoothly with 8K R3D in an UHD timeline on much more humble hardware.
What are your settings for Red RAW decoding in the project and in the prefs?
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Make sure you are NOT using color science "ORIGINAL" debayer setting. You should use "Legacy" or "IPP2". "Original" on full debayer has no acceleration and is why you are seeing 1fps.
