M-Audio Oxygen Faders in Fairlight?

PostThu Jun 30, 2022 5:50 pm

I have an M-Audio Oxygen 49 keyboard with faders that I bought for use in Pro Tools. Everything worked great there. I'm trying to get it to work with the Fairlight page and so far no dice.

I've setup the keyboard in the Control Panels preferences, HUI Compatible. I reboot Resolve and nothing happens. I can move the faders or hit the transport control buttons and nothing reacts in the software. Sure I can mix with the mouse, but would really like a more tactile experience like I'm used to.

Any ideas?

Is the keyboard HUI or MCU compatible?

M-Audio appear to use their proprietary DirectLink mechanism which uses MIDI mapping with custom profiles developed for each host. Resolve is not a supported host.

I'm not sure which the keyboard is, I did try them both.

Thank for the info about Resolve not being a supported host.

Faders and rotary controls on keyboards, hence the name Controller Keyboards, are normally to adjust parameters in VST,VSTI, or AAX plugin instruments using MIDI, not for the control of the DAW itself. The Oxygen 49 is not HUI or MCU enabled so will not work with Resolve.

Depending on how determined you are, you could investigate a third party intermediary utility software like Bome Midi Translator Pro... the aim being to capture the commands sent and received and translate accordingly before passing them on.

Just want to add that there is a free version of BMT, called BMT Classic. It lacks some of the capabili8ties of the Pro version but is ok for a first try.

That would require knowing what MIDI controls Fairlight uses, though. Is that information readily available?

It depends on what protocol you select in Preferences > System > MIDI Protocol .... you have a choice of HUI or MCU.

Yes, but whilst you can monitor your control panel's midi outputs to work out what control sends what code (or just look at the mapping in the Korg app), but how do you know what codes to send to Fairlight so that it responds appropriately?

By adjusting the controls in Fairlight and monitoring what signals are being sent ie exactly the same way... its bi directional.... or probably just by Googling 'MCU Midi Control Codes'. ;)

To make this post a little more worthy of existence, how do you find the Bome Midi Translator to use? I got the free one and, in all honesty, I couldn't figure out how to do much beyond listening to the MIDI in from my control panel.

Check the manual, check the Bome forum. There are even some quick tutorials from Bome on YT.
Once you get the concept of presets and translators its pretty much straightforward.

To get started create a virtual midi port in BMT and connect DVR to this port. You need to save settings and restart DVR. Now BMT can send/receive data from/to device/dvr.
