transitions sometimes don't apply.

PostFri Jul 01, 2022 11:06 am

As I go through timeline in edit, adding transitions, sometimes they won't add. In Premiere Pro, when this initially would happen, a message would come up that there wasn't enough data or something, but then it would just add enough and transition would apply. I don't usually see any difference between situations where one adds and another doesn't. Is there a solution here?

It is essentially the same thing as you describe from Premiere Pro, not enough handles on one of the clips (I assume you are doing say a dissolve across 2 clips or similar). Resolve however doesn't tell you there are not enough handles or whatever or automatically create a freeze frame, it just basically doesn't let you add the transition as you have found. There are hundreds of videos on YouTube explaining this.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the fusion cross dissolve transition might not need the handles, you'd have to check that out as I don't have Resolve loaded at the minute

The easier thing to understand :
if you have first clip max duration 10s, bring it to timeline (without trim). Then butt together with another clip, and add default transition between it (ctrl+T).
The transition will not work and will display popup that there is no enough handle.
Trim the first clip to 9s, it will remain 1s to be 'the handle' and the transition will work.
Begin using Resolve in Mon May 02, 2022.
All of Software in the world are just tools. No perfect Software. Use it if it works for you.

Pretty sure you also need to trim some off the start of the 2nd clip as well if your transition is across both of them

The only time I have found it to work without adding handles first is with the Speed Editor. If you butt two clips up together and hit the Trans key it will ripple the clips to provide the handles and add the transition.
This is a quick video I made on transitions a little while ago.

Video was useful and I can do, thanks. I think the speed editor and trans key refer to an external device I don't have.

Yes, the Speed Editor is a Blackmagic controller you can purchase. A lot of people have not got on with it so there are plenty of them on Ebay. ;)

I laid of DaVinci for several months while I had to rebuild my website after GoDaddy's migration resulted in its total loss. No I am refamiliarizing myself and trying to do transitions, and not succeeding. I notice in your video that when you go to drag, a sort of ghost rectangle moves to the desired place, but I am not getting that even. If I click and try to drag I don't see anything move. Cross dissolve has a red bar in front of it but others don't if I go to them, it stays on cross dissolve.

It's all right now. Had to restart DaVinci, as I couldn't drag anything to the timeline.
