Rec709/2020 to Log C.

PostTue Jul 05, 2022 2:54 pm

Is it possible to transcode the footage from Rec709/2020 to Log C? Purely to practice with Gradings as I don't have an Arri or Red Camera.(unfortunately and renting is also unaffordable)

(Or is that not possible and do I destroy the original Bitrates and Color Depths of the footage with the transcoding by means of DaVinci Resolve 17 or by Handbrake?)

Disclamer: I am definitely not a Colorist.

Thank you very much!

Hi fennad. Most of colorist tutor out there use Log as material of color grading.
i don't know why no colorist color ther rec.709 footage LOL.
Actually, LOG footage is just a raw file with low level of brightness and color that contain so many information there. These information helps Resolve to create amazing 709 footage.

If you have already 709 rec, there are just a little information in it, so you can not convert to log. You can edit it as look like log by decrease its level, and decrease its saturation.
If you need some log file, there are so many footage out there that you can download for free.
Begin using Resolve in Mon May 02, 2022.

Log is not exactly 'raw' if you talk about it technically. Camera's encode to log to be able to store the dynamic range it's sensor can capture within an integer format (10 or 8bit usually) divided in such a way that we get the most usable information across the bits compared to where we want the image to end up in our smaller dynamic range displays.

But yes while nothing is technically stopping you from converting any Rec.709 to LogC you will not get the proper information similar to how the camera would capture it but nearly all Camera vendors offer free sample footage on their websites.

Yep, way better option. Look for any high quality footage from Arri, RED, BM etc. Plenty free samples there.

Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.
