Raw panel necessary?

PostTue Jul 05, 2022 6:05 pm

Hello,

I there any loss of fidelity if color temp and tint for a clip is adjusted on a node vs the RAW panel?

It depends on the color management settings, it is possible to blow the data up in some cases so it doesn’t preserve its form if using unmanaged Davinci YRGB. In color managed projects it should make no difference technically, but appearance of changing temp and tint might be different due to in which stage and how adjustments are applied.
I do stuff.

You can prove to yourself it if works right or not.

Set camera to 2700k. shoot a test chart under sunlight.

Try to fix with Raw Panel and with WB in Primaries wheels.

$5 says the Raw tab works better the the Primaries.

Also some cameras do fake raw and WB is not simply a metadata value, it is baked in in camera and gross shifts may be impossible to recover in post.

See Gerald Undone's great video on the topic
