I lost the red/blue cache line...

PostSun Aug 14, 2022 8:00 am

Did anyone managed to lose their cache indicator line? Mine is gone, the whole project acts like there is no caching at all(playback is terribly choppy). Proxies turned on, caching (tires user/smart), whole shebang. It’s working and present on other projects. Anyone seen it or has any advice? I am running out of ideas…

I even tried exporting this project to a new one, line is gone also.
I am running 18.1 on win 11 (a lot of free space).

The Cache indicators only show up when they need to.

Set it up as Playback>Render Cache>Smart. Wait a moment. Does the red line show up?

In not, initiate playback for a bit. Does a blue line appear over that section?
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I know how the indicator works :), thing is that it doesn't appear at all...nada - not blue, not red nothing. The whole playback is very choppy so definitely it's not because it doesn't need to.
I have a 32GB, 1TB NVM scratch drive and it behaves like on a 10 year laptop.
I am working on a 8 minute material with 4K and 6K footage - at least I am trying to :/

Is your fast drive listed first in preferences, system, media storage?
Does your project setting, cache location path list this drive?

Yes, I have only one drive for scratch, it's a 1tb nvm drive that has still about 400gb space left, my system is on another nvm drive. My footage is from an external drive.

I am pasting a link with screenshots and a video example from DR. I tried attaching it to the post but kept getting errors. https://1drv.ms/u/s!AgjNmAtrPjnXk5RJCOc9X8GdAMjMkg?e=5inFEY

it you select a long clip that won't play in real time, select user cache, then right click on the clip and select render cache Fusion output.

what happens then?

It started to work again, don't know why or how.
One thing I was wondering about is about media storage.
I mainly use 4TB toshiba external drives for footage. It's connected via usb3.1 cable and it's transfer is about 100mb/s - can this be a bottleneck? I thought that if I have a fast nvm cache drive an external disk only for footage wouldn't be a problem but it seems to be the weakest point.

I was facing the same issue, the workaround that I found (that works for my case) is to
1. Delete all render cache ( Playback > Delete Render Cache > All... )
2. Followed by changing your Render Cache to None ( Playback > Render Cache > None )
3. And then again turning it back to "Smart" ( Playback > Render Cache > Smart )

If you followed these steps chances are that your render cache will be forced to be rebuilt so you get your red line back. Kinda counter-intuitive since you lose all your cache but I guess this has to do for now.
