Failed to decode the video frame 18.0.1 (Media Offline)

PostWed Aug 03, 2022 11:05 am

It seems i am the only one with “Media offline” (just for a while, if you click on it in the media pool, the offline warning gone and you can see clip, but you still gonna get problem on export routine) problem on mac m1, 16gb ram and DRS 18.0.1 I have already contacted BM support and in the order: I did a clean installation of DR studio by deleting all the folders (pref and so on), I even did a clean installation of Monterey (12.5), create a new project and import (again) all footage, create an internal DB (main ssd), rebuild the cache and even disabled the cache…but nothing changes. Same (I mean pretty the same) footages (h265 422 10 bit 4k 50p 100MB/s from a7siii) on M1 Max and DRS 18.0.1 work as aspected. The only way to make it work is to disable (in preferences) “Decode H.264 H.265 using hardware acceleration” , but of course everything is slow down. By reading the DRS log seem there are a issue with decoding files.

If you export the full logs, upload them to a file sharing site and share the link here, the BMD reps (and others) can take a closer look for you. They're less likely to get involved if they only have the excerpt you included in your post. If possible, you should also export and share a 'dra' (archive) containing a project and a small media sample that produces the problem on your machine. Other with the same and with different setups can then test to see if they get the same results with the same project and media.

Here you can download full log. Regarding footage, "Media offline" is random they are not always the same files...specs are: h265, 4k, 422 10 bit 50p 100MB of bitrate (Sony a7sIII footage). Project is at 25p, FHD (but in 4k same issue..).
Ty in advance

I don’t know if it’s the same issue, but I see that behaviour with Resolve 18.0.1. I was having some HFR recording issues during our recent heatwave so files would write alright in the camera, but once they failed (exclamation point), in Resolve the last frames would show as media offline. It seemed to correct itself by mousing over the file.

My media is better now the heatwave is over.

To be clear, issue is present also when media are stored on internal ssd

Yes if you mousing over the clip media will back online at list on media pool, but i still have offline media in timeline and off course during export process ( I have to try to export files many many times before it works ... even ten times). Relink all of them is useless, the issue come back as soon as you click "relink" , even after import all footage in a brand new project...after a couple of seconds you can see "media offline" in random files

After few test I can say that the problem is related to Long GOP compression, doesn't really matter if is h265 or h264. With Intra frame compression all work as aspected and no message"Media offline" appear , even Sony XAVC S-I format (500M) is very smooth . Of course h26X are not intended as a editing workflow but as a delivery codec, instead of that Resolve 17.X can deal really well with those files compression (Long GOP). BM please take a look...(still waiting for customers care answer)

**EDIT the problem "Media offline" still persist even with Intra frame compression....

+1 for this issue. Rendering out from 120fps XAVC footage using hardware acceleration on an M1 Mac Mini presents offline frames and compression errors. Switching off hardware acceleration fixes the issue but renders take twice as long. Similar problem cropped up in Premiere 21 but has been fixed since.
