Davinci Resolve 16 cannot open EOS R5 clog file

Completely new to video editing.

I shot a few clips in 4K hq 24p in clog using my Canon R5; however, when I imported them to Davinci Resolve, the video did not show up. I could only add audio to the timeline. I tried a few clips in 1080 25p clog as well, and the same thing happened.

Just wondering anybody has any insights on this?

You may need the Studio version for that codec type.

Hi Peter! I have the same problem with Canon EOS R6 clog footage. I understood that you are from Blackmagic, so could you please confirm as a fact (and not "you may need") that the Studio version is needed? I'm more than happy to purchase it if this is the case, but wouldn't like to pay for it only to find out the problem persists. Thanks in advance!

If the clips are 10 bit, you'll need Studio.

Confirmed, they open on the Mac, so you'll need Studio on the PC.

Assuming you are talking about the type of files being discussed in this thread:

They do not work in free Resolve on Windows. They do work in the Studio version of Resolve on Windows.

Installing the Microsoft Store HEVC Video Extensions makes some 10 bit H.265 files work on free Resolve, but it does not make these Canon files work.

Before I purchase Resolve Studio (I currently have Free version), I'm hoping to confirm that that STUDIO can import and edit the following on my Mac without needing to transcode:

Canon EOS R5 4K, C-LOG, YCbCr 4:2:2 (10-bit), BT.709

I tried to import some 4K MP4 files into Resolve Free, but only got audio (like the person who originated this post). I did the same with HD MP4 files with the same result - audio only.

Before I purchase STUDIO, I just want to make sure that I'll be able to import these files.

I'm running Mac OS 10.15.7 Catalina with a brand new MacBook Pro 16-inch:
- 2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9
- 64 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 Memory
- GFX: AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB; Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB

Verified on a 5,1 MacPro with Catalina and an AMD RX580 card, that the files don't work in the free version.

They do work in the Studio version. Tested 16.2.8 and 17b7.

On my system, the 4K files play at about half the frame rate without caching.

All three clips play on a MacBook Air M1 in the free version of Resolve without a hiccup.

All 3 clips play in Windows 10 as well with Studio v17 Beta 8.

Hi there, I've same issue (only audio from the clip in Davinci, the footage does not open on VLC, windows media player even after installing the HVEC codec). For DaVinci Resolve, now it's the version 18, so not sure if that has not been disabled in the newer version.

Could someone please try on his computer to check if DaVinci 18 free version open that file? If so, should be an issue with my laptop,(Dell Latitude E7470) and in this case, any advice how to solve this problem?

Looking at the V18 supported codecs document, I don't see the 10bit h.264/265 limitation listed for Windows for Free. So it appears we now get 10 bit in free in V18?

That appears to be true.

Just wanted to update this post, that this is not true. There is still no support for 10 bit H.265 files in free Resolve 18 on Windows.

I will request that future updates to the Codecs list attempt to make this more clear.
