magic mask - sooo limited

PostSat Aug 20, 2022 1:36 am

So I cut out a person using magic mask - works ok (hair is still a problem) - then I want to add a shadow to the person. When I add a drop shadow - the magic mask render completely goes away. So I figure, maybe if I turn it into a compound mask? Nope. That doesn't work. How about render in place? Well, that negates the alpha channel. My work-a-round was to take it into After Effects with alpha channel and add the drop shadow. But really? Can we please get this thing to work correctly?
Also, once you cut someone out using magic mask...why isn't there some sliders to control the edges, the matte, something? Is there a way to soften and blend the edges that I don't know about?

Works fine for me.
Make sure you add a serial node for your shadow OFX and add an alpha output on the Colour Page.
There is a full set of matte controls in the Magic Mask panel.

I have also found Magic Mask to be very glichy. You're not alone!

The new Depth Map effect in Resolve 18 is another way to isolate foreground elements so that you can apply effects such as drop shadow or blur backgrounds, etc. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks very cool and quite flexible. (Note that it requires the Studio version). See this introduction.

IMHO, both features are not intended to replace greenscreen. They are for separate grades on the isolated elements, where you'd normally not work with very sharp edges.
The software may be free, but the hardware needed for smooth performance is not.

For some reason - when I did it today, it worked. I find that to be a problem with 18...usually everything works but many times I have to close down and restart and then things work.
Also...if I play around with the magic mask cut out clip too much, it unrenders and I have to re-render.
Resolve is miles above so many programs - but still needs much work.
Even a simple example like this. I made a text graphic. I select the font I want. But then when I go to make another one - why do I have to re-set the font I've selected. ??

When I'm creating multiple text graphics with similar characterstics (font, colour, shadow) I usually just copy the first one and then change the text, size and position of the copy.

I haven't delved into this, but for more sophisticated projects it wouldn't surprise me at all if there's a way to publish attributes from one text node and then use them in others, so that changing the one node would automatically change all the others.
