Canon C Log 3

PostSun Sep 25, 2022 6:28 pm

I am using Davini Resolve Studio (v18.0.3) and just bought a Canon HF G60. If I shoot in Canon C Log 3, I can convert the color space of an individual clip in the color page of Resolve using the Color Space Transform Effect. I do not know if it is possible to convert Canon C Log 3 to Rec 709 using Davinci Resolve Color Management in the project settings. This would be quicker than a clip-by-clip conversion. I can do this with BRAW clips I shoot with my BMD PCC 6K.

Does any know if it is possible to use the Color Management settings to convert C Log 3 clips to Rec 709 at the project level. If so, what are the correct settings to select in the Color Management drop down menus of the project settings.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If you manage at the project level all camera raw formats and formats of which Resolve can grab the metadata are automatically managed. The formats that aren't recognized will be set to the project's Input Color Space by default. You can change either that, or even better just select all your Canon footage and right-click -> Input Color Space -> select what you recorded in.

If for reasons you don't want project level management. You can also select all your Canon footage in the colorpage -> right-click -> add to new group. Then you have an extra node tree before and after the clip level node tree. You can use the Post-Clip Node Tree to place the CST to convert to display and the Pre-Clip Node Tree if you wish to grade in a different color space than your camera's. DWG/Intermediate for example. Just remember if you do use DaVinci YRGB non managed you still need to match your timeline space in the project settings to the color space you decided to grade in at the clip level otherwise your color space aware grading tools aren't color space aware ;)

Thanks Jim. This procedure works. It is interesting that you can select a "custom" preset and set the input color space to "Canon Cinema Gamut/Canon Log 3" in the project settings, and it does not convert the Log 3 files to Rec 709. Maybe if someone at Blackmagic is monitoring this thread, they can look into it.

Jim:

The only thing I can think of is that the Canon Log 3 file from my HF G60 may not have the metadata in it to tell Davinci Resolve that this is a Log 3 file. So you have to forced feed that information, so to speak, by setting the input color space at the clip level.
