Computer upgrade

PostMon Sep 26, 2022 6:30 am

Although my desktop computer is coping with Davinci Resolve I fear it is only because of what I am doing with it, I am only a novice doing composite illusion clips like Zac King and (I wish) Jamie Fenn. My main objective is to keep my 83-year-old brain active and working as upgrades are at a premium.

I have listed the complete specification of the computer.

I am considering an upgrade with a budget of not more than about £750.
Can I ask the people on this forum how I should best spend my money?

I am aware that one Item to go will have to be a motherboard as the one I have will not accept windows 11 and also, the Nvidia G force 4GB GPU. ( but to what)? Although the SSD is only small it is enough as is the SSHD storage with external storage to help. I would also want to upgrade from the 16GB memory. I am not too sure about the Intel i7 8700, but I am hoping it will be enough for a while.
Please give me your recommendations.

Thanks, Arthur

Do you need Windows 11, Arthur? If you feel that you do, your motherboard has a TPM header, so you could add a GC-TPM2.0_S TPM module for under £20, which should make it Windows 11 compatible.

You should be able to get a new 12GB RTX3060 from around £350 at the moment, perhaps less if you shop around carefully. Your existing PSU should be sufficient for a 3060... anything more power hungry (eg 3060Ti) might be a problem.

I would consider adding a dedicated cache drive. A 1TB NVMe would cost around £75.
The old boy wrote:I would also want to upgrade from the 16GB memory.
For around £60 you could double your RAM (to 32GB) by adding an additional matching pair of 8GB RAM sticks... or go to 48GB by adding a pair of 16GB RAM sticks instead (approx £120).

One potential option might be a used i9-9900K (3.6Ghz/5.0GHz, 8 core)... if you are interested, second hand electronics company 'CEX' sell them at £260 with a 2 year warranty, but given your use case, it's probably not an upgrade you need to prioritise.

Hope thats helpful.

My choice would be upgrading to an RTX 3060. They're about $400 now, and will offer a very nice improvement.

More so if you have Studio, which can be had with the remainder of the funds.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Agreed. My RTX 3060 handles Resolve with ease.

I bought a 2TB NVME drive to edit from but it's proven unnecessary. I can edit off my outboard USB 3.0 drives in 4K with no issues related to video.

I do near-zero Fusion work. Cuts, dissolves and titles, speed changes and the usual CC (including some localized CC).

I agree with your brain capability retention strategy, although I'm a relative youngster at 76.

Alec, I need to modify my post.

The 2TB NVME drive I suggested wasn't necessary is in fact in regular use on my system. Not for original "source" footage, but as a scratch drive for all the various media that Resolve creates during operation.

My "CacheClip" directory on that drive is currently about 1 TB. Absent that hardware, my system performance might drop significantly. If you're upgrading your motherboard to a new one, it will certainly have provision for at least one NVME drive.

To be clear, Alec's existing motherboard already has 2x M.2 (PCIe) slots available (so there is no need to upgrade the motherboard for this).
