BM Cloud Store - free account

PostSat Oct 01, 2022 10:37 pm

Hey gang,
It would be fantastic if you offered a free BM Cloud Store account with a, say, 50MB limit. This would allow us to save our project files to the cloud for easily moving between laptop and desktop, where the media files are already stored on both.
Currently I'm looking at how I can use something like OneDrive to synchronise the C:/Users/<your user name>/AppData/Roaming/BlackMagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/Support/Resolve Disk Database directory.

I know that data is expensive to store and deliver, so I would never suggest allowing media files to be stored for free, but being able to store projects in a way that makes them accessible from anywhere would be a great addition.

Hope to see a notice about this in 18.0.5. ;)

Thanks for your consideration and all the best,
Dax.

Use .drp exports with any cloud service and you are set.

Hi Uli,
Thanks for your reply.

You are missing the point. Exporting/uploading/downloading/importing .DRP files is a manual process. The advantage of an integrated cloud service is that you don't need to do any of that.

OK, if your time is worth it, what's wrong with that fee? It doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
C'mon, 5 bucks and up to 10 free collaborators!

Agreed. Compared to the cost of the hardware to adequately run Resolve and the other costs associated with post production, $60 / year to house your projects in the cloud does not seem that unreasonable but of course, to each their own.

I'm a home user (of Resolve Studio), I don't have collaborators.
And 50mb is an insignificant amount of storage.

We already have solutions for that "other problem", though, so it seems kind of a waste for BMD to spend development resources here.

One Drive
Google
Etc.

Yep, so where's the automatic synchronisation that BM Cloud provides?

Please re-read the first post. I specifically mentioned my workaround for this. Workarounds are often non-ideal solutions.

It's called syncing. Choose project folder add it to automatic sync. Every cloud provider has it

Don't sync project database directories/files, that's a recipe for disaster if a database is used from multiple computers at the same time. Syncing exported .drp files is safe.

Regarding free accounts, doesn't sound likely as they just launched this cloud service. What would they gain from making it free as well? They have to pay for storage/traffic and they're not financing it by selling personalized ads like others do.

Grant likes to disrupt the business so you never know. But with the Resolve user base in the millions that might be a bit too much.

I have 1 way sync, files in local directory update the cloud, the cloud doesn't update local directories. Only purpose is as an automatic backup. As has been mentioned manually producing drp's is manual.

Sure, but Dax is looking for a way to sync projects on a desktop and a laptop, not just backup.

Have a look at Path Mapping (page 144).

Path mapping is useful but I don't see how that will change anything if he wants a way to access projects between machines without a cloud account or without a local on-premise server.

To the extent that Dax has described the extreme hardship of manually syncing a project as involving "Exporting/uploading/downloading/importing" let's be clear that it's really just exporting and importing ... the upload and download part of the sync is entirely automatic should the user choose to set it up as such ... and the 'importing' itself is just a double click, so it's really incredibly easy for someone who wants/needs to avoid paying for a cloud library to manage without one. I've no doubt that the original post is well intentioned tho.

Dax, my take is no. There was time used to develop the service, to completely re-haul teh database under the hood to make it possible, the actual infrastructure to store and run the service.

It cannot also be free. i dont know which kind of work you do for living, but I'm sure you would not like to do it for "free" all the time.
