Incorrect V18 Codec Support Documentation

PostMon Aug 22, 2022 10:21 pm

ts well known V17 Resolve Free on Windows would not open 10bit h.264/265 footage, though undocumented as BM never published any supported codecs for V17

You did publish a supported codecs document for V18 a bit after it was released. I noticed it doesn't show such a limitation. I don't recall seeing this limitation being removed publicized.

User here tested on their machine and unable to open (i'm on Studio), so I suspect they just messed up the paperwork.

If you have V18 Free and want to test and don't have anything 10bit, Here is a 3 Sec shot of test chart from my R5, H.265 422, 10bit,IPB, CLOG 3, Cinemagamut.

Do you have a question?

It wasn't necessarily that well known. Because for a long time, you could get a free HEVC Codec plugin from the Microsoft store that gave the free version this capability.

But yes, it's now available in Resolve 18 Windows free version without needing that. The V18 CODEC doc is correct.

Publicize? "General performance and stability improvements." And the V18 CODEC doc, of course.

Are you saying 10 bit h265 read support is included in Resolve Free on Windows now?

I am not talking export. Or hardware acceleration. Just being able to read the 10 bit h265 files without a red screen and audio only.

Hi all

This was listed in 17.4's Readme - under Codecs. In other words, any H.265 flavors that can be natively decoded by the operating system can now be leveraged by Resolve.
Hardware accelerated H.265 encodes on free version on Windows.

This is in regards to export. That is not the topic I am discussing.

I am referring to decoding of 10 bit h.265. The 10bit part is key as 8 bit has worked forever obviously.

Thanks Dwaine, can you confirm on a V18 Free machine there?

I have had two users tell me they only see red media offline frame and audio, same as V17 did when trying to read 10bit h.265.

Another user brought this up recently, and I did verify on a Windows machine that did not have the Microsoft Store HEVC Video Extensions package installed, that the free version of Resolve 18.0.1 was playing 10 bit H.265 files.

What I didn't do, just to be extra certain, was install Resolve 17.4.6 free, to double check on the same system that it did not play the same 10 bit H.265 files. Since you are questioning this, I will do that test tomorrow and report back.

Awesome, thanks.

I am surprised to hear BM added 10 bit support in free. Not complaining for sure.

When you added h.265 export in free in 17.4 it was pretty big news. I honestly think this is more useful, so surprised to see no one has picked up on it yet.

The Windows machine I tested this on, even though it lacks the Microsoft Store HEVC Plugin is somehow playing 10 bit files with free Resolve 17.4.6.

Finding an unadulterated Windows machine that doesn't play 10 bit files with the Resolve 17.4.6 free version, shows it also doesn't play 10 bit H.265 files with Resolve 18.0.1 free version.

So with apologies and egg on my face, and bad news for Windows users of free Resolve, I was mistaken about the ability of the 18.0.1 free version to play H.265 10 bit files, and it appears that it really is a manual oversight that it doesn't show that the free version lacks this capability.

Ok, thanks for confirming.

Can you add correcting the documentation to the BM ticket system, or should I send a request to the support email?

I am hopeful the codec doc will be modified in some way to indicate this.

BM Couldn't be bothered to publish a supported codecs document at all for V17. So they are miles ahead this time.

Can you image selling a product and you can't actually tell your customers if it will work with their footage or not?

How many seats does the new Ford F150 have? well the V16 version had 4. For the V17 model year, customers have been able to fit 4 people inside, but we don't actually know for sure.

But now one OS is missing, namely iOS!
To fill you in: all my GOP codecs I threw at it work, but in RAW only BRAW.
DNG sequences only work with a hack.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.
