Anyone else having constant crashes with the 18.1.1 update?

PostTue Dec 06, 2022 6:54 pm

I have been running the paid version for abut two years. After updating to 18.1.1, I have had multiple crashes on the three projects since updating. I also updated my GPU driver right after the Davinci update so I am not sure which one is causing the issue.

Just starting to work on my third project since updating and now getting "Critical Exception Bad Allocation" errors which causes the software to lock up. This is a project that I just started adding a few video clips and voice over so barely anything there.

Never had any of these issues prior to updating to 18.1.1 and updating my GPU driver so just wondering if anyone else is having issues with 18.1.1?

Thank you.

Seems to be Monterey for you (and Vetura for those with massive problems).

I did initially disable the other GPU but I haven't check in a while to see if that changed after Windows updates. I will verify tonight. DaVinci lists the other GPU but it cannot be selected so im not sure what that indicates.
Could be due to the fact I indicated the NVIDIA only in the NVIDIA control panel. I will verify.

I will attempt to load logs.

18.1.1 is crashing on me when using the fusion text that comes with Davinci. I'm trying to use 2 callouts at the same time and it crashes on the edit page and in render. Any ideas why?

Just want to follow up that I completed an entire video like normal with no freezing. But I used a mix of Gopro and Sony A7iii files like I normally do. The freezing issues all occurred with videos that I recorded with my Samsung S22 Ultra in vertical (portrait) mode (4k, 30fps, mp4). I also discovered that my DAW was freezing and showing that my memory was maxed out after loading all my VST's. Nothing changed with the DAW to cause this.

I then changed my Virtual Memory to "Automatically manage paging file size" (Control Panel - System - Advanced System Settings - Advanced Tab - Performance settings - Advanced Tab - Virtual Memory - Change). While in Performance settings, I changed visual effects to "Adjust for best performance" (this caused my file manager thumbnails not to show previews so I had to turn that back on in the file manager settings). Memory showed back down around 50% in my DAW after changing this.

Windows is ridiculous. But it seems like the virtual memory was the one that fixed my memory issues. Not sure if a Windows update changed that or what happened. It was set to manual but I did not note what I had it set to. Whatever it was it wasn't enough all of a sudden apparently.

I will be doing another cell phone video within the next week so hopefully I don't run into the same freezing issues. I will update if I do. It just seemed like the Samsung files bogged down Davinci more than my A7iii or Gopro files for some reason. Not sure if it was due to the frame rate mismatch because the Samsung is the only device that does not allow me to shoot in 24 FPS, 4K (8K allows 24fps). Maybe it was the frame rate mismatch bringing the 30fps into a 24fps timeline... not sure yet.

I'm pretty sure it was the fact that phones are generally not shooting a constant frame rate at all.
So, it was more than just a mismatch of fps, like from a serious video camera, but a double challenge for DR. No wonder the crappy memory management failed.

My laptop if I drop a large number of clips into the timeline is flakey. I assumed it was the low memory on the laptop. 16GB. The desktop seems rock solid.

Looks like the crash issues continue for me on 18.1.1. I did just create logs after crashing within minutes of starting up and attempting to finish a video.
Can anyone tell me how to submit the logs?
Thank you.

I upgraded to 18.1.1 from 17.4.6 this week, and I too am having problems.

I worked a pretty simple edit (4K) with transitions, one Fusion comp for tracking / stabilizing a clip, and a single music track.

Rendering DNxHR worked fine. Using any other codec makes it crash.

My system specs are okayish (AMD R5 3600 / GeForce 2060KO / 32 GB RAM / 1TB M2 Drive), but 17.4 handled these style edits with no problem.

I'm just going to roll back and wait for a more reliable version. I didn't even get to try the new features of 18.

Start up time is much slower for me now and was crashing on startup when i connected the speed editor. Few restarts later and everything good except slow program launch. Not too bad though just slower than before.

I'm not really seeing any issues editing, but rendering has become a real problem for me, I have had to slice a 2 hour render into no more than 10 minute segments and even then the same segment may require rendering 3 times before it actually gets all the way through, renders stop at random times within these segments.

My GFX card is an old nVidia 970M with 6GB but I've never had such persistent rendering issues until 18.1.1. There are no studio drivers for this card and the last official driver for it was years ago, tried multiple different drivers but none had any affect on the crashing.

To be fair, the timeline consists of loads of stills and video clips, and the stills are animated using fusion, it's almost like a memory leak on the GFX card is happening.

I haven't generated any logs for this issue as I do have a workaround (having to render some clips in place, such as ones with Optical Flow on them)

Render in Place can be very helpful in such cases.
And then, if you are rendering directly into H.264/265, try to render Cineform first and later encode to a GOP codec. I found this can get you through the render on weaker GPUs while direct renders crash.

Davinci is constantly crashing on me. Several times when editing and on the color page. I now can't even get through a render. I don't understand what the problem is. I though Resolve was supposed to be more stable than Premiere?

Quick update:

While I didn't completely redo my edit, I did indeed roll back to 17.4.6.

Then I took the DNxHR file and made a final tweak (speed ramping one portion and adjusting the audio to match).

H265 rendered in 2 minutes 15 seconds. Zero issues.

It must be an encoder issue with 18.1.1

Yup. Working on footage all shot in BRAW. Nothing fancy, just some cuts to 1 super long clip. Always make sure to save every 30 seconds in Resolve. Not much can kill the flow of an edit worse than constant crashes and needing to back the train up. It's a wonder why Hollywood doesn't use Resolve.

DaVinci crashes consistently during 18.1.1 render of 3 minute video. I do have a FPS mismatch since I included a couple of iPhone videos. I haven't had this problem since v16...

"crash" = during render DaVinci simply disappears. When I restart I see in the Deliver tab some percentage of render that happened before the crash. I've deleted the directory that contains CashClip, unchecked some "Stop" render options, etc.

Hi all

As Rohit and Peter have requested before, please provide information on crashes.

Please take a look at the FAQs in this forum on what info helps...
  • include logs (reopen Resolve after a crash, go to Help > Create diagnostic logs on desktop)
  • describe your setup (hardware, OS, driver versions, peripherals etc),
  • describe your project/timeline - codecs, resolution, effects.
  • summarise the context of crash - e.g during render, playback, enabling an effect etc. Details (e.g codec settings) and steps to reproduce the issue help too.

If you're on windows, the first thing I'd suggest is to download and cleanly install drivers meant for creative use - depending on the graphics platform you can look for "Studio" or "Pro" drivers. Recent drivers have options to clean install (where any existing DLLs or Windows DCH replacements are removed). The process will need a restart or two.

Thanks

Thank you for the reply. If I thought there was someone that could take the time to make sense of my logs (and resolve) I'd definitely upload, but when I have taken the time to make a perfect report I didn't get an answer.

My hardware and software is up to date in my signature.

I've had success rendering when I reduce my timeline resolution to 1080p. I've tried many other suggestions that didn't help. DaVinci crashes every time (on this particular project) with the timeline resolution set to Ultra HD. This is my first project (of about 30 or so) that uses Compound Clips. I don't think I've used any other new features in this project for the first time. Maybe I'll decompose all of them and try again.

But 1080p is good enough for now. Maybe I'll try again after the next update.

Steve, if you provide your logs and any other info that BMD requests, you can help the overall community determine the source of the crash and perhaps then a fix will come.
