Camera raw controls don't work with .braw files

PostFri Dec 09, 2022 4:41 am

Greetings,

I'm working with some client footage that is entirely Blackmagic RAW files. When I try to adjust the settings in Camera Raw for a specific clip, nothing happens. In the media panel the clips are listed as Format: BRAW and Video Codec: Blackmagic RAW

My steps are:
* Make a brand new project without color management and import footage
* Add a clip to the timeline, go to the color area
* In Camera Raw interface, change "Decode Using" to "Clip"
* Adjust color temperature, exposure, etc.

Currently using Resolve Studio 18.1.1

Thanks

I'm experiencing the same thing. Changing the color management settings seems to at least trigger the camera settings, but changing any RAW settings doesn't do anything. 18.1.1 on Macbook Pro 16" M1 Max 32GB RAM. 4k files look flat and 6k pro files look like the camera LUT is applied, but if I switch from non color managed to color managed, the 6k pro BRAW files look like a double lut is applied whereas 4k BRAW file looks like the camera metadata is applied correctly, but any change to settings doesn't do anything. Restarting doesn't help.

Apparently most of the file names were changed by my client. Any file where the name was changed can't be adjusted in raw. However, if the file name is original, "A003_09282032_C011" for example, then the raw controls do work.

Why would this be?

I was incorrect, it is something else. In the attached image, the top clip can be adjusted in raw, but the bottom two cannot. The top clip has a different icon than the other two. Does anyone know what the icons indicate?

Two wild ideas:
Is it possible that your client shot some clips in ProRes and later renamed the .mov to .braw?
People sometimes do crazy things…

The different icons seem to hint to an image sequence maybe?

When you check the file metadata at the media page, what does it say?
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

That's a bad idea.

See if you can get the original media cards copied in their entirety and unaltered.

Changing the file name likely altered the file header as well, so the file itself no longer reads as braw, the metadata is corrupted or gone. That camera icon is unfamiliar, but it's not what you'd see with a braw file, as your example illustrates. The first file is what you'd expect.

I believe that icon is when you have proxies attached to it. Maybe the issue is also there somewhere? What if you turn off the proxies in the timeline?

Thank you all for your helpful input and feedback, I really appreciate all of it.

That was the correct answer. I did not import the proxy files, but they were still getting linked and that was preventing me from accessing the raw controls. I moved the files out of the project and now it all works as it should.

What a relief.

Thanks again!
