Since you only need the first two channels of audio, you can use the clip attributes > audio tab to change the audio channels to a single stereo channel using embedded clips 1 and 2 and delete all the other channels. Do this before you use these clips in a timeline or elsewhere (i.e., before you link them to a video file). Joe's tutorial is also very good - he shows the case where you actually want access to many of those extra channels and yet want to be able to edit only a single (adaptive) audio channel.
