My audio line turns red and won't play music

PostSat Jan 14, 2023 8:05 pm

New here and to Resolve..
Made a video with all photos and music timed to my liking....but..
I recorded music off YouTube, imported it to my media pool...via a
Thumb drive.
It shows up in media pool and plays with photos fine.
If I take thumb drive out, I
The music/audio line turns completely red and does not play.

Does it know I did not purchase this music? Am only using for my family video not vlogging or such.
Thanks for any help. (Beginner terms please ] )

Clips in the media pool are linked to the source location, not copied to a media drive.
You need to do that manually.

The Beginner's Guide goes over basic operations like this really well. I recommend all new folks start there.

Thanks for the responses.
I did quick search before posting but got
Sooo many responses to 'music issues'
But didn't see my problem listed.

Will read the beginner guide.
So importing into media pool isn't
Same as doing 'it manually '?
Will look into that, thanks.

Consider you have 100TB of source media on a feature film, you don't want to move that more than once, so the media pool items are pointing to the source, not importing/moving the media to another drive.

So copy it once to your high speed, permanently attached media drive before disconnecting the thumb drive. You can use the clone tool in the media page.

Apart from the training recommended by Jim, this might give you some insights too: https://www.dropbox.com/s/9i3x06004w0jp ... d.pdf?dl=0

Thznk you.
Tried the training and didn't quite get it..
Found clone tool, and I have a 'Bin' with a drop down of 'song'.
Now when I try and move folder up to the top beside 'add job' box, nothing g happens.
I don't get a red circle meaning 'No', just nothing g happens when I move it?

Very secondary question....If I learn this, will I be able to use my own music off CD's that I bought years ago?
Thanks for taking the time.

To use the clone tool, open the clone tool panel and click 'Add Job'. Then drag a source folder from the media storage to the source drop-zone and a destination folder from media storage to the destination drop zone (drop zones are indicated in the clone tool). The folder you are cloning and its destination are in the media storage area, not the media pool. The media storage is that set of folders in the top-left of the media page.

The clone tool is just a safe way of copying media from one location to another. in your case, it's used to copy the media from your thumb drive (source) to a folder location on your local hard drive (destination).

As Peter mentioned, the reason your original issue occurred is because media in Resolve is not copied into Resolve, Resolve just points to wherever the media exists. When you dragged your files into the media pool from the thumb drive, Resolve created clips that linked to the media on your thumb drive. When you remove the thumb drive, the link to the clips is broken.

Peter mention 100 TB as an example. Most feature films would involve thousands of clips occupying potentially hundreds of Terabytes of disk space. This is why Resolve links to the files rather than copying them.

It would be perhaps be simpler to copy the media from your thumb stick to any permanently attached drive on your computer or any connected drive that you use for regular media. A folder will help with organisation. Then you can link to that media from within Resolve normally. You will have to specify the drive as a media one within Resolve preferences.

I don't believe Resolve can rip directly from CDs in the way that Avid can, at least I just checked it on this old laptop that has version 16 - I am not at my edit machine with 18, so maybe that has changed. You will have to first rip the tracks from the CD to either to some other format, such as MP3s or Wavs. On Windows this is easy by using the integrated Media Player and I am sure Mac has the same facility.

Thank you Steve/Time Traveler..
I feel like I am doing what you say...
Am in Clone area, bin file down
Below, drag into 'box' beside
'Add job', and nothing happens?.

My song is NOT listed above where
C drive or my stick shows up, just
Down below...
I will keep trying, thank you.

Thank you Steve F.
Do you mean copy to my C drive like
In downloads?
I will try that.

I picked a 2.20 minutes song and
Added photos and 2 transitions.
I am not jumping in to do anything spectacular
Here in my 1st attempt. Just basics
And will learn as I go.

It is a personal achievement for
Me to accomplish learning this.

Thank you all. You must be rolling your
Eyes at my total beginner questions. :)

The clone tool is not needed for your situation, you’d rather use it to copy footage from a camera card before using that card again. Your source is pretty safe on a CD.
I’d suggest using a ripping tool that can also convert your sources. Make them 48 kHz and don’t compress. The format would be PCM, which can be WAV or AIFF. For your first steps, you can store those files in any folder. I’d avoid cluttering Downloads with them.
Once you get familiar with DR, better get a separate drive for storage of media, an internal one if possible. The C: drive is your system drive and if you run short on space there, your whole system can go down.

As Uli said, Nancy, you will need to use a ripping tool, since you can't just copy CD format audio to a drive. Media Player on Windows will rip the tracks to PCM Wav format - the ripping command is in the top right. Failing that look for such a tool on the internet, there are many free tools for this purpose.

It is highly preferable you don't use your C: drive, since this is the drive that is also processing and reading your programmes and so even if you have the space it may stutter and slow down on the timeline and if you have a crash all your media could be lost too. If you have/can get an external drive attached via either usb/thunderbolt or whatever your laptop/pc uses then create a folder on that called something like 'Resolve Media' and place all your media files in there, including your ripped CD tracks.

And nobody should be rolling their eyes here at anyone. I have a neighbour who is a highly qualified academic doctor in another field. She recently took up filmmaking because it's something she has always wanted to do and now is making paid corporate videos and they are very good indeed.

Thank you Steve and all. I added song to a 4T hard drive I use for my hobby photos.

Imported song into clone area and it DID move to 'Job 1' !
the source line is blank but underneath that is ' D:\song'
When I click folders in upper left, it brings me to my photos used AND 1 is titled 'Timeline 1'

I cannot move that to Destination?

I feel like I am close, so thanks fornthe explanations in laymen terms!!

I already told you, you don’t need the clone tool for that job.
Simply drag the song to the Media pool.

Thank you Uli,
that's what I did the 1st time but it becomes a red line as soon as I disconnect my thumb drive?
The pictures also were copied to computer, then imported to media pool via same way...BUT only the music doesn't stay unless thumb drive is in??
(Read above for better description)

I think I am close just need to know how music stays with my video..
Thank you all for taking the time and patience to help a new person!

Of course, the music needs to be copied to the computer's storage too and dragged from there to the Media pool.
Please understand that any dragging or importing of media into DR is not copying. They need to be on a storage that is permanently connected as long as you use DR.
For music, it would probably even work if you leave your thumb drive in, but that's a slow storage and not recommended.
