Annoying repeating sound in my audio.

PostSun Jan 29, 2023 8:39 am

I used a Sennheiser MKE 600 mic directly into the XLR on my Ursa Mini Pro 12K and I have this very annoying sound throughout my audio track.

It sounds like an old cassette tape squeaking as it goes round and round.

Noise .... (half second no noise) ... Noise ... (half second no noise) ... Noise etc.

Is there a way to isolate this noise in fairlight for each of my clips, then remove it?

Anything I can check to see what caused this noise? Eg. mic malfunction, XLR cable problem, etc.

Thank you!

Can you share a sample of the noise?

I have no idea how effective it would be for intermittent noises, but I would give Voice Isolation a try. Pages 3603 and 3692 in the October 2022 edition of the Davinci Resolve 18.1 Reference Manual. I believe it requires the Studio version.

Do you have a external HDD on the same surface as where the mic is mounted on.. ?

I have an SSD mounted to my camera. The mic was 20 feet away using a 30 ft XLR cable.

I tried both Voice Isolation and Noise Reduction on the clip you provided and they both seemed to reduce the noise. The Voice Isolation seemed to do a better job but I would try both and see if one works to your liking.

I tried noise reduction which helped a little but I can't find Voice Isolation even after looking at the manual. I don't see it. I only see vocal channel under effect.

It is in the Inspector under the Audio tab either on the Edit page or Fairlight page, you need to have the Studio version to have it.

I see it.

It seems to have helped. Now, I have to do some testing to see why this sound happened in the first place.

That sounds like electrical interference from something like a clock or timing device as the noise is at regular intervals.

I did some tests. I don't hear this rhythmic sound if I record with the internal microphone. But when I use my Sennheiser shotgun or lav mics connected into either XLR 1 or 2 input on my Ursa Mini Pro 12k, that noise pops up as soon as I hit record. I don't hear it when I'm not recording.

I may have to move this topic to a different forum, but if anyone know audio and have some ideas, please share.

If you can, try a different cable on the Sennheiser as the original may have screening problems. Same goes for the lav. Other than that it may be generated noise from the Ursa Mini which is the last thing you want.

I think it's the Ursa. I will try a different cable, but if it's the camera, what then?

I'd wonder if it's some noise with the phantom powered circuit or local interference in the area. Are these internally-powered mics or externally-powered? Can you check them to see if they work with other devices?
