Timecode and Audio file

PostSun Jan 29, 2023 12:58 pm

I received my Deity TC-1 set few days ago, so it's time to familiarize myself with this subject.
I have my ordered Zoom F8n Pro coming zoom, but for the moment I am playing with the Zoom H6, which has no timecode option.
One suprise I allready had, is that to a wav file with no timecode burned in, the option of "update timecode from audio track" becomes not available.
What is the reason for this and how do people go around this problem?

Not quite sure I'm following, so apologies if I have this wrong.

Many cameras allow adding timecode by plugging into the mini jack, which records that timecode to the audio portion of the recording.

That Update option is for changing the timecode of a video file when that timecode is part of the audio track.

If there is no timeocde in the audio track...

Thanks for answering Jim :-)
Yes, there is timecode on track 1, on track 2 there is scratch audio from the TC-1 and on track 3 there is a boom mike. Somehow DR does not allow for converting the timecode on the audio track, hence my question.

You're performing this action on Video clips?

On video clip it works fine, but on the Zoom H6 it does not...

My understanding is that feature is only for video clips.

I will defer to others if that's not correct.

That's my understanding also.... My question is why and how do I sync the video with the audio since that is the point of timecode isn't it?

Thanks for helping...

Only idea I have is to have the Sound Recorder generate the timecode that you're feeding to the camera.

Thanks Jim, thats indeed what i am planning to do with the F8. But the nice thing about the H6, is that I can easely mount it to my camera rig, hence my question.

Broadcast WAV files (BWF) definitely do have a separate section for audio timecode, usually in the File Header. Pro recorders like Aaton, Nagra, Sonosax, Sound Devices, and Zaxcom can definitely do that. I'm not as sure about Zoom recorders. At one time, Tascam had a portable timecode recorder that would correctly embed timecode in WAV files.

Timecode on audio doesn't have any meaning if it is not generated from the device that that generates the video, or a common TC generator feeds both.

The Tascam DR-40x does not have any way of inputting TC from a camera. It is easy to use, as the crystal it uses to digitize the sound samples is very accurate and holds sync for at least 2 hours without drift. (I have not tested it for longer periods, but suspect that that would be no problem. The fastest way to get a sync starting point would be a cheap clap slate which gives you both a visual sharp movement, and an audible impulse.

You could also build a slate box with a button that lights a light and creates an audio signal matching the light duration. If the box audio is connected to an input for the recorder, and the camera is trained on the light you will get an audio track with that beep, and a video track which shows the same beep. It is easy to match the audio and video when they are placed on the same timeline. We used this method with double system film rigs where both the camera and the Nagra (sound recorder) for years.

Hello,
DRV do not find LTC timecode on audio file. You can do it using the Tentacle software to find the TC and the SondDevice Waves software to change the TC on the file.
But it will be easier with the zoom F8. I own one and I send the TC output to all my cameras, via XLR cable for short distance (TC on channel 1, premix on channel 2) or via cheap Rode Wireless for long distance with Rode AI for iPhone.
Everything is synched easely in DVR. By security and with non audio camera, like drones, I use the old hand clap in front of all cameras and mics.
Before the zoom I owned a Tascam D-860 and I used a iPhone app to generated LTC, distributed to audio on all devices.
Since I use the Zoom F8 all its very easy now.

Old thread... but I thought I'd chime in with my experience with the TC-1. I decided to purchase a MixPre II 3-channel (Sound Design) because it can mount between my camera and tripod and it encodes very accurate TC into the WAV files. It also outputs TC so I can jam-sync my master TC-1 to the MixPre and then all my other TC-1s sync to the Master TC-1. This technique works very well and likely also with the Zoom F8n Pro (I'd be curious to hear from the OP). I saw this technique on a YouTube video from Creative Video Tips, btw:
