HDR output to Decklink Mini Monitor 4K

PostSun Jan 29, 2023 4:21 pm

hello All,
I cannot get the Decklink card to play HDR material...
Don't know if i have a setting incorrect, or something else...
Has anybody else had any luck with getting the Mini Monitor 4K card to play HDR?
It plays regular video just fine.

below are my settings,
and my preferences settings
and the settings recommended in the resolve manual

Any suggestions are Welcome!!

Thanks!!!

yes, it outputs HDR10+ no problem . Looks very nice on the TV when played from a USB drive.

Do you mean it won't output 4K? Or do you literally mean only HDR has a problem? Like some HDR metadata is not getting through to the monitor?

it outputs UHD to the HDMI TV no problem
it looks fine, for regular footage -- nice color balance, etc

it just does NOT make the image HDR while i am outputting through the Decklink card... while monitoring / color correcting it
i am back to just trying out settings,
rendering,
playing on the TV via a flash drive plugged into the USB port on the TV,
then going back to Resolve and wiggling some dials,
rendering... etc

i "guess" it is not getting the HDR metadata... but i am no expert ...

Also
when i open up the rendered files ( h265 HDR MP4)
in Blackmagic Media Express,
it connects to the Decklink card and plays UHD video just fine...

it just does NOT trigger the HDR on the TV

the same rendered file
played from the USB port on the TV
triggers the HDR on the TV ,
the little marker that says "HDR" appears in the corner of the TV,
and it looks like HDR.

so the Blackmagic Media Express and Resolve Studio are doing the exact same thing.
HDR is not being triggered.
so i guess its NOT a setting in Resolve, since Media Express has NO settings to change...

Any ideas?
thanks!!!

From the Reference Manual.

Monitoring an ST.2084 image is as simple as obtaining a ST.2084-compatible HDR display and connecting it to the output of your DeckLink 8K, DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G, or UltraStudio 4K Extreme.

Decklink Mini Monitor 4K supports HDR. I have one at home and it activates HDR with Resolve on my Samsung QLED.

What kind of TV do you have? You may need to activate HDR manually.

It was a later addition. I forgot which driver version they added it.
The manual may not reflect that change.

I don't see a way based on the manual.
Try enabling Dolby Vision in the Color Management page of Resolve. See if that triggers Dolby and activate HDR.

okay, i turned on the dolby vision checkbox in the color management page
and restarted Resolve ...
still no bueno...
Still just outputting normal image through the decklink card...
you think its my TV? Time to upgrade to a OLED?

I dont think it is a hardware issue (OLED vs LED). It is likely a software issue. Either Resolve is not transmitting the proper HDR metadata or your TV is not respecting the HDR metadata.

I assume all of the HDMI ports are HDMI 2.0 or better?

yes , the TV specs say HDMI 2.0 ports,
the cable says HDMI 2.1,
and i assume the decklink card is transmitting at HDMI 2.0 spec.

Is there any easy way to check to see if Resolve/ Decklink-card are transmitting the HDR signal?

i have a Ubuntu install on this same hardware, and i tried to get Resolve to work on Ubuntu, so i could test the hardware-- Decklink-card--- TV, but since i have a AMD RX580 GPU, i have not been able to get Resolve on Ubuntu working... Sigh...

A stupid question but - how does the picture look on the TV, does it look good or washed out, greenish, colorless, dull? Perhaps you're getting HDR but not the right brightness?

the image looks very nice-- color is great, well balanced, better than the computer monitor etc...
its just overly bright and not HDR.. no dark blacks, etc --
its just like a render of the file without the HDR metadata turned on .
also, the TV triggers a little "HDR" logo for 3 sec when each HDR clip starts playing ... and the Decklink card does not trigger the HDR logo at all..
so i am pretty sure that no HDR metadata is going through to trigger the TV

55R625 TCL TV
the decklink card and the TV are connected via a HDMI 2.1 cable i just bought...
at least it is printed on the box HDMI 2.1
so i cannot iron-clad guarantee it isn't a Chinesium ripoff...
but seems legit...

The cable naming doesn't matter (and there are no 2.1 cables per se, only ultra high speed premium), HDR metadata goes through any cable. If you're on Windows, can you try connecting your regular GPU to the TV, activate HDR in windows and see if that works, i.e. whether HDR label pop up and whether you get HDR picture settings unlocked.

i have MacOS 13 ventura going right now for the Resolve machine
and a Ubuntu bootable install also on the same hardware, but have had NO luck getting resolve to run on that install
so no windows currently on this machine...
maybe i will try a windows install and test your concept
Thanks man!
