A non-complaint about the current state of Resolve

PostSun Jan 29, 2023 9:10 pm

Typically, users of an application will use the application until they encounter some issue and then they will go to the application's support forum and ask or complain about the issue. I am not here to do that. I just wanted to say that in the past I have had a lot of issues with Resolve crashing or performance issues etc.

But the current version of resolve, 18.1.2, has been just a dream for me. I have been cranking out projects day after day in Resolve - about 5 completed projects per week from initial ingest to final delivery and I have had ZERO issues.

Kudos to the Resolve development team. Thank you for this amazing tool. I am very happy with it and very impressed with what you have done with this tool.

A non-complaint about the current state of Resolve

I agree. I have found Resolve to be very stable, reliable, and currently my favorite platform on which to edit.

Sure there are tons of ways I can see to make it better. Many (most?) are very inexpensive development-wise. So I mention them. But I should also express how much I like the system. Thanks for giving me the opportunity.

another thumbs up.

terrific software, much less prone to 'hiccups' than any other nle i've ever used. however, the learning curve, along with the manual, can prove daunting at times ;-)

One thing people don't always consider: Resolve may be crashing because of a system issue (or a hardware problem), not because of a Resolve issue per se. We've delivered a short documentary, a short fictional film, a 42-minute TV pilot, and two features for January without any major incident. I think I had two crashes in one day, but it was a momentary blip: I relaunched and everything was still there, as I left it seconds before. Zero work lost. As far as I know, it's been only two crashes for the entire month. Some of these sessions were complex, with heavy Neat Video NR and/or Dehancer film emulation.

Render times, export times, and save times are considerably faster in Resolve 18.1.x than they were in previous versions. There are always little nit-picks you can have about anything, but we're very happy with Resolve 18 so far. The new OFX plug-ins are particularly welcome, as are the refinements in Magic Mask.

Some issues that I encountered in previous versions have been resolved with no changes to my system. But I agree. Especially on the Windows side.

It is a huge challenge to develop for the windows platform and have your software run properly across a myriad number of different possible system configurations and combinations of disparate hardware.

It is, I suspect, much easier to create a stable application for the Mac.

I am not a professional user, but for all the years I have used the paid studio version there has been very few problems. Had some problems in the start, many years ago, before I learned to keep the GPU driver updated, and managed a few times to get a crash using Fusion and overtaxing my 11 year old PC with a 1060 GPU. Very pleased with the efforts Blackmagic puts into this system. And the support forum is a gold mine for any kind of DR questions and support!

Unfortunately Resolve 18.1.2 seems less stable than the last v17 series for me, or it only works well if the user does not make mistakes:
Yesterday I started a simple project with just a few video clips and audio files, and I managed it twice to make Resolve unresponsive. Unfortunately I cannot remember what the corresponding last action of myself was. The effect was that there was no disk I/O, no CPU usage, but still Resolve stopped reacting to user input (keyboard and mouse). When trying to terminate Resolve cleanly, Windows told be the app is not responding. First I chose "wait", but as that didn't help, I chose "terminate" the second time.
Fortunately I did lot loose much work that way.

If this is happening frequently enough to you I'd suggest starting a screen capture and then running Resolve until it hangs. Then you'll have a nice record of all the things you did.
