Resolve 18.1.2 crashes & mac studio restarts

DaVinci Resolve keeps crashing suddenly followed by a pink screen on my GUI monitor and my Mac studio shuts down and restarts. I haven't been able to pin point the cause yet. I notice it mainly occurs when I am working on any H264 media(DJI/Sony A7sIII). The project plays back fine until it encounters an H264 clip in the timeline. I remember playing back the same clips in the timeline 2 days back without any issues. I was on 18.1.1 when the issue showed up, so I updated to 18.1.2 hoping it would solve the problem. Briefly for a day or so it was okay and the problem seems to have started again even after updating to the latest version. I am not using any third party OFX, only native resolve tools in the project.

The Mac studio and my raid enclosure are in an open/well ventilated environment. There is sufficient space for the fan and vents are not blocked. I don't think the Mac studio is overheating

I am able to playback 8K/6K/5K/4K R3D files, Sony Venice XOCN RAW files and Arri RAW files successfully. I only face the issue on H264 media. The moment I try playing a H264 clip inside resolve, it crashes, a pink screen shows up and the Mac studio restarts. I am able to playback the same H264 media on Quicktime player without any issues. I am only facing the issue in resolve

I am not rendering anything, just switching between clips in the color page to grade or trying to playback shots in the edit page.

Right now the only temporary fix is to transcode H264 media into ProRes and working with it. But I want to be able to fix it completely. I never had this problem with H264 media until this week

That should not shut down the hardware. I'd also suggest a thermal problem or a defective power supply.
To watch the thermal situation, get TG Pro. It's free for a limited period (and useful enough to be bought).

Here is an update: The problem is not limited only to H264 clips now. I tried playing back 4K DCI proxy clips(ProRes 4444) generated within resolve of some 8K XOCN RAW footage and resolve hung, a pink screen appeared, the Mac studio shut down and restarted. I am able to playback the clips without issues in QuickTime player.

I don't think the Mac studio is overheating

usually in a PC you have an app that can show you in real-time the temperatures and see if any is critical, you just need your CPU with a slightly faulty thermal paste to sent it to the beach of lost souls. (Spinning ball of death... see what i did there?).

so, to exclude that kind of error, can you effectively monitor the machine?

did you tried to use earlier Drivers if applicable?

I saw it, but until the OP actually measure it, we dont have any other data to go from. This is also a new M1, i have no idea if there are data leaks or other issues, i would have waited a bit before to jump in it....

meh.... i keep upgrading my 7 year old winzoz box for peanutes and be happy....

People judge from the problems showing up around here, but a properly configured Windows system can be very stable for DR. I'd still suggest it to anybody who doesn't need to put the machine in a backpack.

Yes, TG Pro and similar alternatives which shows T°, HD room, memory use, network activity etc etc in the menu bar could show and overheating problem, and allows to troubleshoot it before it totally restarts the machine...
But you can also watch the activity, memory and/or GPU usage, and no need for extra app for that.

Now, say we're sure (actually we're not without real monitoring) it's not the issue source, if Resolve is the only software where it happens, could it be a plug-in issue ? Like anything which was installed out of the regular Resolve installation ?

Anyway, in addition to these specific investigations, the Console would show you anything you want to know...

I've also started experiencing this recently on a project with a bunch of mixed media. Haven't noticed it until now because I usually work solely with R3D footage.

Resolve freezes for a few seconds when timeline hits a new clip of a different media type, then flashes pink screen of death and restarts... it's been happening with .JPG, .mov(H.264), maybe a couple other filetypes (I didn't catch which clip it crashed on). Machine is not overheating, the fan doesn't even kick on

I'm also having frequent full crashes on Resolve 18.1.2. Screen just goes black, LCD is still on but it's a black screen and I have to restart my PC. I've used this same PC, editing the same type of files, for years with other versions of Resolve. I'm running a 3070 8gb, Ryzen 5900HS, 16gb ram and editing optimized media files. I've run memtest, my pc has no issues with any other application. I've reverted to the last update of DR 17 and the problem hasn't occurred. No idea what's going on with the latest update but it has effectively broken for me.

Temperatures are monitored with HWinfo and are well within spec. No other applications open while I edit. I know I don't have an ideal amount of RAM, but I've been using this same PC for hundreds of hours of editing from the same cameras, basically the same projects, and haven't had any issues until the latest updates for DR 18.

The crashes happen randomly sometimes immediately upon opening a project, sometimes after an hour of editing. The crash has occurred in the fairlight tab, the fusion tab, and the edit tab. I'm able to render projects without crashes. Windows system logs show nothing, DR diagnostic logs show nothing.

I don't believe this is a Resolve specific issue...
We have currently 4 Mac Studios at our facility, and ALL of them experiences pink screens very often.
The machines are used differently, some with compositing software and one with resolve, for example.

The only exception is one of them, instead of pink screen it just dies. Hardware wise this is the only one with only 1 monitor, the others have 2 connected to the mac (we've tried USB C > HDMI, USB C > DisplayPort, HDMI > HDMI). So I suspect the pink screen has something to do with the video card...

It's a shame, we paid so much money for the 4 machines, and one of our compositors get pink screens at least once a day.

Bring them back to Apple.
My decent laptop is the most stable machine I had for DR until now.

When playing back the same H264 files from another hard disk, it works perfectly. But when it is stored and read from the OWC thunderbay, it causes a kernel panic and the system crashes. Also this happens only on RAID 5 volumes created using SoftRAID. My other SSD RAID 0 volume has no issues.

One of the fixes OWC has suggested is to change stripe size to 64 for all RAID 5 volumes on Apple silicon macs. But this works only for some users. My RAID 5 has been on 64 strip size since it was as created but I have been facing the issue.

OWC and Apple claim that they are working on a fix. I am facing the issue on the latest version on MacOS Monterey. Some users have been able to fix the issue by updating to Ventura. But this is not feasible for me as I still have many on going projects and some plugins/software I use is not yet optimised for Ventura.

I'd avoid soft RAIDs for professional work. I always found RAIDs with a dedicated controller more reliable.

Hey Prateek, do you have any solves for you how you got Resolve to even recognize your OWC volume? Called OWC and they didn't seem to have answers on that front.

My machine started doing this same thing today. When I try to play a timeline, the machine kernel panics, flashes a pink screen and restarts.

I am running two OWC Raids controlled by SoftRAID, however, I've never had a problem like this in Resolve until today. It started happening when I connected an UltraStudio 4K Mini so I can have UHD monitoring.

Before I added the UltraStudio 4K Mini, I never had this problem but now the system crashes immediately when I hit the space bar to play a timeline.

Everything in my system is up-to-date. I can't work like this, I hope a fix happens soon.

After lurking in the forums for a while, it's definitely a Mac vs OWC issue. So frustrating. I have a doc project due on Friday and now I'm having to deal with this BS out of nowhere, when my system was running fine for so long. I'm just going to have to replace the OWC enclosures, I don't have time to wait for them to figure it out.

I had a lot of inconsistent results using OWC raid 0 s. With Softraid. Sometimes wouldn’t mount, sometimes went off-line. The solution was to use the switch o the raid enclosure to make the entire enclosure a hardware raid. Did it for 2 enclosures 4 months ago, have not had a problem since.
