Mezzanine codec is the expression for a bunch of codecs, like DNxHR, Cineform (which I like under Windows) or ProRes (great for Mac). They are all available in the free version.
DNxHD is an older version. While it should work, I'd rather try DNxHR.
These Codecs have different levels of quality. For your purposes, DNxHR HQX 10-bit is plenty enough, or GoPro Cineform YUV 10-bit. If both of these crash your computer, there's a deeper problem. And don't save to the system disk, these exports can be very large.
Don’t approach DR with your preconceptions from another NLE.
Many features are better, some worse, most are different.
