No Playback In viewer window / cannot play timeline.

PostThu Feb 02, 2023 10:07 pm

Hi I am having an issue where when I press play on the timeline, it does not begin playing. I can scrub through just fine but it wont play. I have no image in the playback window either. However, when I go into fairlight, I can play it and hear the audio just fine. I am on davinci resolve 18. I updated all my drivers, restarted the program and my pc twice. Not sure what the issue is. Let me know! Thanks!

How about helping us to help you with more information? ;)
Free or Studio version of Resolve? What version of Windows, amount of RAM, GPU, etc? What is the source, resolution and codec of your video clips?
You can never give too much information when asking for help.

If you see no video in the timeline but can play the audio, it could be that the video is 10bit. To work with that you would need the Studio version of Resolve.
Resolve Studio 18.1.4 Build 9
Dell XPS 8700 i7-4790 4 core, 24GB RAM, 2 x Samsung Evo SSDs, GTX1060/6GB (528.02 Studio driver), Win10 Home (22H2), Speed Editor, Faderport 1, Eizo ColorEdge CS230 + BenQ GW2270, Canon C100mk2, Atomos Ninja 2.

Hi, my system is running 16 gb of ram, an AMD Ryzen 9 5900x, and a rtx 3070 laptop edition. My video is 1920x1080 at 30 fps. All clips are either mp4s or mp3 files. I was able to edit my project fine for a week, but then randomly it stopped working. I have the same issue with every other project. Im not sure how to check the bit rate but im almost positive it is not 10 bit.

You can check the bit rate by highlighting a clip in the Media Pool and opening the Metadata tab.

If still no joy post your log and NFO files like this:

For a lot of reasons, compressed H.264 files are not ideal for Resolve, especially on a laptop. You'd be better off transcoding those to DNxHR SQ in the original resolution.

It randomly started working again. When I went in to check my bit rate, the media was no longer showing up grey, and I can play the timeline now. If I have any more issues ill let you know. Thank you very much!

Those are for someone like Dwaine from BM to look at and respond to.
