Audio Scrubbing - Lagging Performance (Studio 18)

PostMon Feb 06, 2023 2:36 am

Hi Guys,

When I have "Audio Scrubbing" enabled in the Timeline settings and on the Edit page, the video playback performance is not as smooth while moving the timeline cursor back-n-forth with the mouse as when this setting is disabled. It's not terrible, but annoying. Is this normal? I'm using Davinci Resolve Studio 18 (Version 18.1.2 Build 6).

I don't notice any difference.

Highly depends on the audio codec and container type if your machine is underpowered, but your machine looks quite powerful. Nevertheless, what are your source file characteristics?

Hi Steve!

Great points! I'm using MPG files re-wrapped as MOV. I've been reading about the Resolve/MPG issues on the forum. Maybe this is contributing to this issue?

But, this could just be in my head. I'm new to Davinci Resolve. I've been a Magix/Sony Vegas user for years. And, I think, sub-consciously, I compare the performance between the two as I use Resolve.

I wonder if the characteristics of the audio stream make a difference. Is it necessarily mpa audio and is it 44.1 kHz (which would then need to be upsampled to 48kHz)... I'm not an audio expert but I do wonder. I've got some M2T material recorded on an old Sony FX1 (HDV) but I believe I had the audio recording set to 48kHz, PCM (don't recall) and it seems to scrub just fine with audio scrubbing. Not in front of my machine at the moment but next time I am, I'll try to remember to report back here with the audio characteristics of that HDV footage.

Hi Steve!

Below is my MediaInfo data for the this MOV-wrapped file. Hey, I've got a Sony HDR-FX1 HD video camera. I love that video camera. Great in low light. But, I didn't like the firewire connector. I fried the firewire connector one time and had it fixed a shop.

Run a test with some decent camera media. I think BMD offers some BRAW for download.

@Douglas - could be that ac3 audio is just difficult to decode compared to many formats - funny you should say that you fried you firewire port. I had exactly the same thing happen. In my case, I had a PC built for me and the jokers wired the firewire port on the case to the wrong connectors on the mobo and when I tried to connect my FX1 to the PC - fried. The PC maker paid for the repair (which was good for me - it was quite expensive as I recall - this had to be back in 2006 or so). Good luck.

Try selecting Show All Video Frames. Without that checked Resolve will prioritize the audio over picture playback if it has to.

Hi Charles!

That did make a little bit of difference.

I think this is more on me than on Davinci Resolve. When I have the whole Timeline displayed and move the cursor briskly, the video looks choppy (what I originally called Lagging). But, I think this "choppiness" is due to the cursor not hitting each-n-every frame as I span the Timeline with the cursor. If I zoom in on the Timeline and move the cursor, the playback is smooth. I just don't remember seeing the same thing in Vegas when moving the cursor throughout the entire Timeline.

Hi Steve,

Yep, I made the mistake of using a USB-to-Firewire adapter/dongle between a computer (without a Firewire port) and the video camera. It fried the small circuit board behind the Firewire port on the camera. I found an outfit that specialized in fixing that problem, but it definitely wasn't cheap. :o
