Blackmagic Proxy Generator on Windows - Available formats

PostMon Apr 18, 2022 8:04 pm

Since we don't have ProRes rendering on Windows, I expected to see at least DNxHR and hopefully CineForm as proxy formats, but on Windows we only get H.264/H.265.

Is there anything preventing adding DNxHR and CineForm to the Blackmagic Proxy Generator?

I suppose the new HyperDeck can't play CineForm, but it can play DNxHR. Regardless, I'd like to request both (and ProRes...).

Edit: The plot thickens. The stand-alone Blackmagic Proxy Generator app has only H.264/H.265. But within Resolve 18 you can still render proxies as DNxHR (the old Optimized Media feature also has CineForm of course). If I point the Blackmagic Proxy Generator app to a proxy folder with DNxHR generated by Resolve, it recognizes that proxy creation is already completed, but the Extract Proxies feature does nothing.

Seems to me the missing DNxHR is just an oversight, or it's not feature complete yet.

Proxies are limited to 1080p in the app, so no need for DNxHR, it would just be DNxHD

Please don't derail the thread. :)
DNxHR doesn't have the strict specs that DNxHD has so they can be different, but don't have to be. BMD already acknowledges this as the proxy settings in Resolve lists DNxHR, not DNxHD. But again, this thread is about the Blackmagic Proxy Generator app on Windows only being able to create proxies in H.264/H.265. A severe limitation compared to the macOS version.

I hope it's a temporary omission only. Not everybody has a machine with hardware decoding for H.264/265.

Um, where is everyone locating the proxy generator? I checked the site, and unless it's hidden in some text, I am not seeing it. Did I miss it during the initial install?

Check your program files under the Start menu, it automatically installs it.

Proxies in h.264 for cloud syncing make sense.

Proxies in h.264 for heavy local editing does not make sense.

DNxHR is needed on Windows, with all of its flavors, HQ, SQ, LB.

Otherwise, this Proxy Generator is useless in big projects.

Just to check: are you using the studio version? Grant mentioned different codecs between the free and the paid version. Also he mentioned more codecs would be available when you purchase the windows codec pack. Haven't looked into it myself will take a look tomorrow.

Studio version, yes. Codec pack is just for H.264/H.265 acceleration and doesn't apply to DNxHR/CineForm.

Voukoder doesn't apply to the Blackmagic Proxy Generator. BMD controls which codecs are available to it.

I appreciate the thoughts about workarounds, but what is really needed is native support in the Proxy Generator for the codecs that Resolve can already render on the Deliver page.

Now, I understand Resolve/Proxy Generator are separate apps and the Proxy Generator does't use the libraries that Resolve uses. But that's ultimately what's needed for this to be useful. At the moment it seems it's only using codecs available to the OS.

+1. Because it's a beta I guess we are looking at the stripped-down basic version for now. Hopefully that will change soon.

I would also like to see some flexibility in terms of where the app places its proxy folder. I prefer to keep all my proxies in one place (regardless of where the originals are located) so I can easily delete them all once finished with a project.

Hi Jim,

Those are the settings in Resolve you are referring to, right?

AFAIK this thread is about the "Blackmagic Proxy Generator" stand-alone app. I don't see anywhere to specify where the proxies should be created; it puts them in a "proxy" sub-folder of the original media.

You can't change the target folder in the Proxy Generator.
I just found that sidecar files for BRAW are supported (at least on MacOS). Would be nice if somebody tries under Windows or Linux. But no solution for other RAW or log formats.

Problem occurs when generating Proxies from within Resolve as well.

Kinda makes the whole Proxy feature useless, I think.

I'm seeing the same thing in the Proxy Generator, no destination option.

When creating proxies from within Resolve itself, the proxy footage is placed in the location designated in the preferences for "Proxy Generation Location". It also keeps the original footages file structure in the new proxy location. This is the same way 17 worked when generating proxies from within Resolve.

This is all the same in the final release 18.01.
  • Proxy Generator App doesn't provide anything but H.264/H.265.
  • Contains no options so its assumed one cannot pick the destination folder.
I cannot use proxy generator until both these things are corrected. I want an option for a less CPU intensive codec.

I also need a proxy location that is on my external SSD so I can take the proxy footage with me and leave the original footage behind. Placing proxy footage with the original is undesirable. I don't want proxies polluting the folders where the original footage is stored.

I do hope dnxhr formats are coming soon. I was keen to try the proxy generator so I could transcode in the BG and keep working. But there's not much point for me to transcode original h.264 to h.264 proxy.

It is quite frustrating to have a proxy generator without a proper editing codec on windows.

We mostly handle large projects - feature-length or multi-episodic shows. In its current form, the Proxy Generator is useless for us.

More codecs and destination folder choices would be beneficial.

The Proxy Generator that's included with Resolve Studio 18.1 is still missing the proper formats.

I can generate DNxHR from within Resolve, but it would have been nice to have it done with the utility that was specifically created to do so automatically in my watched folder.
