Half of Stereo Track Lost

PostThu Jun 01, 2023 3:46 pm

One half of the stereo from media used in an edit has disappeared. The audio of all other clips in the project are fine. If I move the audio from the clip in question to a different track the problem persists.

I'm attaching a screen grab showing the media/clip's attributes. I'm also attaching a screen grab from Fairlight that shows (on track one) the edited clip with its blank stereo track.

When this clip/media is played independently of Resolve the full stereo is there but when brought into Resolve and played either as a whole clip (top window left) or in its edited form half the track is lost.

I've been working on this project for a few months and originally there were no problems with this clip. At one point I lost connection to this media so re-imported and reconnected it. I don't know if this is when the problem began as there is a good chance I would not have noticed it till now.

Hope someone can help me solve this mystery.

Thanks.

John

Also. When I first opened the clip attributes one of the audio channels was marked "Mute". I changed that to what you see now in my screen grab. I had no idea why it would have said "mute" and I thought initially that that was the problem and that changing it as I did would solve the problem.

What is the source essence in the container format?

Your signature indicates Resolve 15, is this correct?

Reynaud,

Thanks for the reply. I'm afraid I'm not quite sure what you are asking.

The media that's causing me problems is 1440:1080.mov 29.970 fps in a project that is 3840;2160.mov 23.970 fps.

Sorry to be adding to this, but if you look at the screen grab attached below, this time taken from the edit page, you'll see that one small clip of the series shows waveform. This clip of all those in the series, all taken from the same media source, is the only one that plays full stereo.

When I select the clip displaying waveform and hit ”F” the whole clip that appears (top left window) plays stereo.

Reynaud,

Forgot to give you an answer to the second part of your question. I do have R17 and Big Sur OS on one computer but have kept R15 and Sierra OS on another as Sierra's compatible with Final Cut and R15 was the last Resolve version compatible with Sierra.

I'm editing this project on R15.

Are you seeing the same behaviour on the Resolve 17 system?

Does changing Clip Attributes for the affected Clips to map embedded channel 2 correct waveforms?

Any chance of updating to a more recent version of Resolve?

Thanks again for your reply Reynaud.

The clip attributes remain as they were in the screen grab I posted earlier. Removing "mute" from Channel 2 as I'd originally found it and changing the setting to Embedded Channel 2 has made no difference.

What confuses me most is that, as you see in the screen grab I posted most recently, one of the 15 or so clips that make up the sequence using this same source material does show waveform and does play in full stereo.

I have been editing this project on R15 and have not tried to open it in R17. (I've been comfortable in R15 and so far it's had all I need)

I'm begining to think more and more that my problem stems somehow from this mixed frame rates - 23.976 for the problematic media/clip, 29.970 for the project.

I began to rebuild the sequence and for some reason the auio began to become stereo again, but the audio was out of sync with the picture. I tried importing the version I'd superscalled to 1920:1080 to see if that might work better. It didn't and when I reverted back to the original 1440:1080 version the audio was no longer stereo. Confusing. Sure confuses me.

My plan now is to convert the media once more in Topaz changing it not only to full HD but also changing its frame rate from 23.976 to 29.970. We'll see how the peroject deals with that.

Seems I found my answer.

As I'd mentioned, at one point when I'd checked clip attributes of the media I noticed that the second stereo channel was marked 'mute". I was sure changing that would solve my problem, but it didn't. I've been trying a whole lot of other things till it occurred to me that I hadn't clicked on clip attributes of each portion of the media used in the edit in the Timeline. When i did I found that here each had channel two maked "mute". Once I changed this on every section of the media used in the Timeline my missing stereo channel returned.

Immediate concern solved but that does raise the question: why had, on both the media page with the whole clip and in each instance of portions of it creating the edit on the Timeline, the second channel been turned to "mute" I cerrtainly had never done that. Hmmm.

Below the after and before settings of the Timeline slips.
