Where is the audio (18.5)?

PostWed Sep 20, 2023 12:59 am

Just about to finish up an almost 3 hour long project. Everything was going fine. Closed Resolve and opened it right back up and now there is no audio. The waveforms are there and the meter is reacting but nothing is coming through. Other programs are working fine, it's just Resolve having the issue.

There was no crash but the logs are at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QQOdqO ... drive_link

This is the second time I've encountered this. I had to just scrap the last project. This is a client project and it's already late so this is not very helpful.

I'm on 18.5 and will not be updating to 18.6 as it's even buggier

I suggest that the forum admin set up a per-release bug / issue board. These bug reports are just getting buried and we simply don't get the fixes we need. Is there a better reporting method?

Nothing? I'd think an NLE not doing audio would be an issue. Is there an actual official BM support system at all? I'll pay. I just need this to work as promised. I have clients and their videos have no damn audio. People need some answers to all of these critical bugs.

Since you have Studio, you are entitled to direct support from BMD - You should be able to use the contact form on their support website to send in a request for support.

Thank you for that info, Steve. I'll give that a try. These bugs are just getting out of control to the point that I can't even use the program. Lots of people are in the same boat right now.

For “work” software what I do is never update to a major or mid (XX or XX.X) point release. Then, once a minor release (XX.X.x) comes I wait a few more weeks.

Then if there aren’t any major bugs being reported (for my OS specific version), I’ll test it: Put in on a laptop, run the Puget extended benchmark & standard Candle benchmarks, plus test a previous fairly complex project + the last project completed. Note I’m mostly testing standard workflow things.

If the benchmarks and testing show stability and no major performance loss, I’ll use that version on main workstation for the next project— assuming all previous projects have been approved.

Yeah, these are all things BM should be doing on a large scale before releasing a version as stable. I'm on 18.5, which is not working, yet 18.6 is supposedly stable (it's not.)

Frankly, I haven't used any v18 release that has not had major bugs in its basic functionality. By basic I mean the ability to trim a clip and have it stay on the timeline and in sync. By major I mean literally deleting everything from the timeline, randomly losing audio, or inserting gaps and shifting sync with ripple edits.

I did reach out to support and they are very attentive. Fingers crossed they'll have some sort of jerry rigging I can do to get my project exported.

Is it possible that somehow your audio settings got messed up? There are many ways in Resolve to silence the audio output to your speakers.

Unfortunately no. Everything was working perfectly when I shut down. Opened it back up and viola, no sound. Tested with other apps and everything was fine. This was the second time I'd had this exact same error. Last time (different project which I had to scrap) I was playing with Fairlight features so I chalked it up to maybe hitting a wrong button. Regardless, if meters are reacting, that should mean there is audio. But no, this time I hadn't even begun working on the audio.

In Resolve you can see the meters reacting and still have messed up the audio settings.

Go into the Fairlight page: On the upper right, beneath the green volume slider it should say "Bus 1 -> Main". If it says "Bus 1 -> Near" then you are sending the signal to alternative outputs (you probably haven't set up). Or vice versa.

In the Resolve preferences -> System -> Video & Audio IO
is there everything configured correctly? Can you post a screenshot?
