I've had a similar issue (18.0??) where when I opened Resolve, my timeline was just blank. Went back to hourly backups and timeline was blank there too despite having had worked on the timeline past the backup time. Had to go back about 4 backups to find my timeline still intact.

Currently the issue on 18.5 is if I close Resolve and open it again, my audio is gone. Just...gone. The clips are there, the waveforms are there, the metering is there. Everything but actual sound. Have been posting logs and begging for help but of course...crickets.

Now we have the infamous 18.6 timeline ripple bug. Very widely reported.

I was at Resolvecon and several times Resolve crashed hard. While being livestreamed to thousands. There was even a fatal error after the livestream. There was a feeling in the room of "Aah, you too, eh?" Kind of those nervous laughs that tells you that everyone has been through this a lot. I hope the BM devs saw that and had to come up with some answers.

I really wish they would focus on fixing these damn bugs instead of making boring detectors or even cool things like the latest cloud features. I would rather have an NLE that is slightly more basic but works.

Many people moved to Resolve because they were fed up with the buggy, finnicky, crashtastic nightmare that is Premiere, but Resolve is now rapidly moving in that same direction. My list of things I cannot do that I should be able to do, combos of things that should work but don't, features that must be avoided, sequences that can't be repeated, etc. is growing to the point that it feels like I'm right back with Premiere.

Existing users bring zero money in for BMD. New users don’t care for existing bugs as they don’t know them. Only new features, not bugfixes sell for new users. Food for thought…

Reputation is important, though. If Resolve develops a poor reputation then future sales will be in jeopardy.

Conversely, the more that BMD's existing users become invested in their Resolve workflows the more supporting hardware they buy, be that cameras, I/O devices, keyboards, control surfaces and panels etc... and now, of course, their cloud centric devices and monthly subscriptions for storage, libraries and presentations etc... plus happy existing users are unpaid salespeople, bringing in new users to keep that cycle going.

I assume on a PostgreSQL server?

You know me: I'm paranoid as hell and backup at least once a day. Maybe twice a day if the client is in the room. I haven't permanently lost the contents of a timeline, but I've had them flicker and get unlinked momentarily. Usually a relaunch fixes it.

If it happens again, try creating a new (empty) timeline and see if that gives the session a kick. I've seen cases where the timeline you were using comes back and everything is fine again.

PostgreSQL, yes.

1) duplicate the database (just in case...)
2) perform optimize/vacuum the database
3) restart resolve

it brought it back....

they are out for espresso
i'm exporting DRP and back'n it up
i asked for two shots, black
i'll be done before the espresso is in my hands

but yea.... it suks when it blows up, i've had somehting like this happen a few times in the last five years, for some reason it seem to happen just after i run out a DRP, so far nothing major has been lost

so far...

i'm done, they are coming in the door, gotta get back to work now ;-)

Yes, perfect opportunity. I think Resolve is generally very, very reliable, but once in awhile, it hiccoughs and things go wrong. I'm perplexed as to how/why a timeline could pop up empty, but there's been enough reports about it for me to be convinced it's a real thing. That's never happened to me, but I have seen things get unlinked, like when a drive unexpectedly goes offline, or permissions go nuts, or a source file folder is moved or renamed.

I've had a project that shows that it has timelines in the project manager but upon opening, it's blank. So the extra drp's and drt's have come in handy for me before.

it's of little comfort, but there was never any worse feeling than a sp master being ejected, but with its contents still wrapped around the heads.

at least we now have 'save' at our fingertips, though even then, it takes a few shocks to have it ingrained ;-)

^^ yes. Do the devs/owners read these forums ?

Dude the bugs in this software are out of control.
I’m at the point where EVERY editing session ends up stopping because I have to troubleshoot. My job is a video editor but I now work as a software tester it feels like.

I have pages of Notes of things that go wrong. Don’t even have time to go to the forums and report this stuff one by one. They need to do a press release at this point.

And every time you report a problem it’s “What are your specs?” We are using modern computers, IT SHOULD WORK. We have $5,000 computers trying to do Basic NLE stuff.

I love/loved this software but it has become very stressful.
What are your specs? What are your specs ?

The forums, Reddit and YouTube are flooded with people having the same issues. Can we all just stop denying it at this point ? Address it and fix it.

Paul, if you could put your specs in your signature as recommended, then we wouldn't ask for your specs. System configuration and specs are part of the puzzle when trying to identify commonalities between those reporting certain bugs. We don't always point at specs as a cause for the bug, but just a contributing factor to help the developers reproduce the bug.

Yes, with 18.6 it appears that there are several additional bugs (showstoppers for many) and of course there are many unresolved bugs that have carried over for several releases which can drive one crazy. I do wish that BMD would acknowledge these in some way but that may be a Marketing decision to not broadcast the defects.

I keep hoping that BMD will focus on defect and workflow fixes for a period of time instead of fancy new features that are often half baked. Love their product and am impressed with their development team but technical debt needs to be addressed at some point.

Cheers

Spec signature added. I’ve also been noticing a weird glitch where my Favorites (transitions, VST, etc) disappear. Sometimes they’re there sometimes it’s blank. I use DVR at least 8 hours a day and I don’t get out much so I guess I’m just salty. It’s forgivable but like I said it’s every editing session, something new going awry. Deadlines make can make it madness.

While I tend to blame Ventura and went back to Monterey, 18.6 is not a very stable version.
I'm considering downgrading now, since recent versions of DR were quite stable on my hardware, which is similar to yours.
DaVinci Resolve is very capable even for free, but you need the right hardware!

I think if it did there would be screaming, banging head followed by tears lol
