Proxies losing multichannel audio track lables

PostFri Jun 23, 2023 10:21 pm

I did a search on this forum and didn't see anyone else inquiring about this topic: Does anyone know how to retain the multichannel audio track lables (LAV1, LAV2, Boom, etc.) when creating proxies in DR? The proxies I created don't have this information. In the attached pic the clip on the left is the proxy for the clip on the right. What am I missing?

I shoot only BRAW. I just don't need proxies.

You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Where did those names come from? Are those actually the audio names in the original source file?

And how did you make the proxies?

Dwaine,

Yes, those are the original labels in the audio tracks (WAVS) as entered by the sound person. She was using a Sound Designs Mix-Pre 6 II and labeling the individual tracks in the mixer or in the Wingman app. She used a Tentacle sync for timecode sync to the ARRI 35. I imported the ARRI footage into DRS, synced up the audio, and then made ProRes proxies. Wondering if when syncing the audio I didn't click on setting to import the metadata. If such a setting exists.

Right, the actual Proxy file is not going to have that track metadata, because none of the Proxy media options support that type of audio metadata.

But why is that an issue? You should not be loading a proxy file directly into a timeline. The proxy file is linked to the source file. And that should always show the audio track names, even if the source media goes away and Resolve reverts to using the linked proxy file.

Dwaine,

You should not be loading a proxy file directly into a timeline. The proxy file is linked to the source file.

So is the issue that I did not properly link the proxy files to the source files in DRS? Are you saying that once that is properly managed the audio channel lables from the orginal source will appear on the timeline for the editor to then select which audio channel they want to use?

When you say, "You should not be loading a proxy file directly into a timeline" I'm a bit surprised as I was always under the impression that proxies are to be edited in lieu of the original massive files and therefore have to be on a timeline to be cut. Or are you referring to something esle?

I appreciate your help on this.

Those are Deliver page settings. Which implies you are not using the available Resolve Proxy workflow methods. Which are described in Chapter 8 (Improving Performance, Proxies, and the Render Cache) starting on page 197 of the DaVinci Resolve 18.5 manual.

If you want to make your own proxy type files on the Deliver page, you're not going to be able to maintain the audio clip name metadata, because none of the Video based render formats support that.

Dwaine,

Well, there it is! Thank you for clarifying the difference. I will now alter my proxy creating method going forward. Much appreciated!
