Solo Voice Actor - Remote Control

PostWed Sep 27, 2023 7:16 pm

Hello.

I am trying to move to Fairlight from Reaper for a video project I am working on.
My PC is outside the booth, and I am looking for "Something" I can put in booth with me when recording my lines.
At minimum I just need something to that could start/pause recordings (I'm thinking a wireless keyboard, or number pad).
But ideally, I would like something that I can see if I'm clipping (VU meter of sorts), and with possibly a knob so that I can control the gain when I need to get loud.

I know this is a niche problem, but I figured I should ask you all in case anyone has any good ideas or recommendations.

In Reaper they have a built in Web Remote which isn't perfect but helped a great deal.

StreamDeck with custom macros would be one option to control the Fairlight ADR panel's Rehearse, Record, Play, and Stop functions remotely. Configure custom keybindings via Resolve's Keyboard Customisation window and create an ADR focused profile on the StreamDeck.

macOS, for example, provides Sidecar to use a iPad either as a primary display or in combination with Resolve Studio's Clean Feed to display picture playback including count-ins, streamers, and dialogue text.

Multiple combinations and options available depending on available toolset.
⟦ Mac Pro 7,1 Rack ⊕ 16-core 3.2GHz ⊕ 32GB RAM ⊕ Radeon 580X • Resolve Studio 18.6.4 • macOS 14.1.2 ⟧
⟦ Fairlight Studio Console (DAE-3 Bay) • Fairlight Audio Accelerator • Intensity Pro 4K ⊕ Desktop Video 12.7 ⟧

Thanks for the reply.

So a macropad with custom buttons is going to be the "easiest" option, but no knob for quick lowering gain (I might be able to program a button for that if I can keep the my voice at close to the same intensity).
Luckily, I'm doing straight voice-over and not ADR so I don't have to worry about voice and visuals synching. If I did, that would involve a monitor in the booth and I really don't need another heat source... That being said, if I want to monitor my levels it might be necessary.

I contemplated a Behringer X-Touch One (A bit overkill) but from the info I can find the lights don't seem to work, or sync up with Fairlight (Might be old info).

As for iPad... I don't really want to buy a product for one use case.

I'm also contemplating a Korg NanoKontrol Studio.

Bring a Zoom F2 into the booth. Copy the files later. ;)
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

That's an option... But I already went through the trouble of setting everything up.
