Artifacting in Dark Areas

PostWed Sep 27, 2023 1:59 am

I'm running Resolve 18.6 on MAC. I'm noticing white specs dancing around the dark areas of my images when I hit play. when paused they go away. Thankfully, when I export they don't exist. I should mention this happens on both my UI viewer and the video feed from my UltraStudio Mini 4K.
This only happens when I add any sort of adjustment to a clip. When I bypass adjustments, no artifacting happens.
The Image I have as an example is a TV. But I can assure you the artifacts are not from the TV as it was off and this happens on other clips with dark areas.

Do you have timeline proxies activated?
DaVinci Resolve is very capable even for free, but you need the right hardware!

What source file format are you using? What camera? What are your hardware specs?

If you can completely disable Performance Mode and just watch the clips straight without proxies or cache files, and they play at speed, do that.

Deactivating performance mode did the trick! thank you.

PS: Proxies were not in use.

Well its back again. I'm getting white speck artifacting in dark areas reaching 0 IRE. Performance mode is off. Not exactly sure what the cause is this time. This footage was shot on a BMPCC 6K Pro at 500 ISO. When I have time I'll run a test to see if it happens on others cameras. Only thing is, I've been grading with these cameras for years and the last month this issue started.

I wonder if this is a GPU driver issue.

Is this something I have a way of looking into on my end?

Nope, and I don't think that's the reason. Jim Simon is using PC only.

Can you post a short clip to a cloud service for others to look at?

I can post a short clip however I did some more testing of variables today and figured out the culprit. The saturation method I'm using for the look I built seems to cause the problem. My saturation Node is set to HSV with only channel 02 activated. When lowering my gamma wheel (overall saturation) I start getting this artifacting. Now I can probably find a workaround, but I'd rather understand how this is breaking the footage as its only in black detail and should only be pulling all data to 0.
