Who will be the first to brave macOS Sonoma?

PostTue Sep 26, 2023 5:07 pm

I'm not advocating updating to Sonoma, but we all know that someone will give it a shot considering that it is scheduled for release today. Maybe best to try it on a separate external drive, though. Interested to hear what those brave souls have to say about it in regards to Resolve...

Be safe.

I'd suggest sandboxing on a spare drive to boot from.

I did a first smoke test on an M1 Pro and Resolve Studio 18.6. Haven't encountered anything new broken in Resolve but all I've done is open and play an existing timeline.

I haven't had the other performance issues people have reported with 18.6 so ymmv.

Installed on Mac Studio M1 Ultra with 64Gb

Slow install but running everything seemlessly.

Overall seems a bit faster as a OS than Ventura.

DR Studio 18.6 works great ... had to enter System Preferences err Control Panel BT
to have it find my Speed Editor ... which it did in about 10 seconds.

Renders cDNG 12 bit to ProRes 422HQ/4444 perfectly.

Working on my 2019 Mac Studio. Speed Editor and Color Panel are alive and well. Seems a bit faster overall. It loads fine on a MacBook Pro with M1 Max but haven't tried a project on it.
Been doing this since cameras went clickety, clickety, clickety, clickety . . .

I just installed OSX Sonoma on MacBook m1 16/1TB and it asks for the Rosetta before installation of the Da Vinci 18.6, should I revert to previous OSX or go with the Rosetta?

@Terry McKinley: Just curious: what VM are you using with Resolve?

And that's using the AMD GPU?

What host software is the VM running on?

I should mention that I went ahead with Sonoma 14.0 on my MacBook (no ongoing critical projects) and some brief tests with 18.5.1 Studio indicate that all is well. Much more testing to do. Cheers.

Note: I have since updated to 18.6 Studio to explore all the bugs reported there.

You need Rosetta as a number of third party sdks and drivers still require it.

Did you upgrade to Resolve 18.6 at the same time? I upgraded to Sonoma while running 18.5.1 and found no difference in Resolve performance with a limited number of tests including the ripple delete test that people were noting as a problem with 18.6. All good. Then updated to 18.6 and the ripple delete sluggishness and audio sync issues started.

Well, many users, including myself have found that 18.6 is buggy and very slow. If you care to revert to 18.5.1 you may have a much better experience with Resolve regardless of Ventura or Sonoma. Cheers.

My Mac Studio's logicboard had fried, after it was repaired it was installed with Sanoma, not my choice. But i also had not contemplated various software support. Normally i wait awhile to update to the latest versions.. at least a x.2 or later. I backed everything up from a Timemachine drive. It seemed to work ok, apart from some things being slow..

But alas... more problems ensued.

The latest version of Resolve Studio does not allow me to copy, back up and or export projects. This also means i cant move projects over to the cloud for which i pay. I have back to back projects so i also cant really take the time reinstall a previous system and move everything over again. It took 1,5 day to copy everything.

TLDR Sanoma does not allow my projects to be exported, copied, backupped and moved to cloud.

Everything is a bug fest already, might as well jump in. I just updated to newest Mac OS and things seem to work better in DVR actually.

I'm seeing a curious problem that seems new to Sonoma - and I don't think it's unique to Resolve.
I'm trying to debug a Resolve hang so I've had to kill Resolve a number of times. Sometimes, even though I've killed it, it appears to stick around in somewhat zombie form such that I can't restart Resolve.

Often when I try to run it in this case the finder will tell me that Resolve is no longer running. Odd!
Once after this I tried running Resolve from the terminal and got this:

Code: Select all
joe@Joes-MacBook-Pro MacOS % ./Resolve
log4cxx: No appender could be found for logger (BtCommon).
log4cxx: Please initialize the log4cxx system properly.
joe@Joes-MacBook-Pro MacOS %

I had to either restart the mac or log out/in to get things working again.
This has happened more than once.

Latest Sonoma no problems so far. Nice to have Mac, PC and iPad though. One of them will work ! The Mac and PC editor have only editing programs on them. Household is really PC and Android so the Studio Max has no linking to anything and just about every Mac service/feature is turned off. Just a computing platform for Resolve, Topaz Ai and Affinity Photo 2. Neither use Cloud storage etc so really clean operation. Chrome is used on both for downloads when needed.
