BRAW broken by macOS 10.15.1

PostTue Oct 29, 2019 11:42 pm

Just upgraded and BRAW reader doesn’t display Blackmagic raw. Resolve 16.1 doesn’t display BRAW either. Other codecs are fine.

I deleted the Blackmagic Raw Player and reinstalled it but that made no difference. I assume reinstalling Resolve 16.1 will also be fruitless.

I called BMD Support just before 5 pm and was transferred to Support but no one ever answered after 5 pm and then my phone lost the connection!

So I went to Apple support Chat and was talking to Tristan who messaged me and while I was describing the issue, the system dropped by chat at 5:15 pm.

Had a long telephone call with Apple who made notes of what happened for the macOS team, but said I need to talk to BMD to get it fixed by BMD. Reminded me I shouldn’t have gone to macOS 15.1 without checking with BMD that it was safe to do so! She’s right, my bad!.

Hey Rick

Today we released Blackmagic RAW 1.5.2 which is now available from our website.

This update provides a small fix for Catalina 10.15.1 released publicly today that has a AMD GPU driver regression issue that is not present on Catalina 10.15 (we are working around their driver bug). Ideally they will also fix the underlying issue but none the less we have done our own fix.

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/

The fix should also be in the next Resolve update.

Thanks.

Until then I’m going to play with the settings and hopefully find a temporary workaround. I noticed when I adjusted the length of a clip I could see the normal video in the timeline thumbnails. That’s the hint I needed. Turn off the GPU as suggested by you on October 15th in discussing the macOS 10.15.1Beta. I just thought that would be corrected when macOS 0.15,1 went public.

It would have been nice if they fixed the issue before releasing it yes, would have meant less work for us too.

BRAW broken by macOS 10.15.1

PostWed Oct 30, 2019 3:00 pm

Yes, when I talked to Apple Support they implied they didn’t break Resolve and it’s your responsibility. Happy to report that turning off the GPU for BRAW decode gets my video images correct again. Now I can edit.

You cannot go back to Mojave in place due to the major changes implemented by going to Catalina. This is unlike most macOS upgrades which usually allow a downgrade. If you are fully backed up, you may have an option. You should be able to erase and reformat your system disk and then restore you data from a backup such as Time Machine.

Philipp, did you uncheck the Resolve Preferences option to use your GPU to decode BRAW?

Hello, i'm having the same issue with braw footage in davinci (in adobe premiere works ok) on a 2017 iMac Pro.
If i select Open CL instead of Metal the image it's ok .
When this issue it's gonna be solved  :?:

Currently rendering the theatrical musical recorded Sunday. Will verify 16.1.1 tomorrow. Tremendous that BMD could provide this update so promptly.

The previous update was just for the Blackmagic RAW player, Adobe/Avid plugins, and the SDK. As mentioned in my post the fix would also be in the next Resolve update which as Peter said above, Resolve 16.1.1 is now out:

Problem still exists on 16.1.1 with RX 5700 XT, if I choose Open CL problem goes away but the lines still exist on metal.

Can you describe your hardware setup?
Support for this card was only just added in 10.15.1, is that correct? Were you using this card before 10.15.1? Are you using a different driver or the one supplied in the OS?

What happens in the Blackmagic RAW player?

Using driver supplied in the OS, I was not using this card before 10.15.1 so I suspect its a glitch with the driver and braw since its so new. Before I was using gtx 1070. The problem also exists in braw as well.
