DR Hangs With BM RAW, Check Your NVIDIA Driver Version

As of Dec 10, NVIDIA has released Studio Driver 441.66 which appears to have solved the problem
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=104082. If using a GPU earlier than 1xxx, there is also a Gaming Driver 441.66 which has been released.

---- Below retained for historical context -------------
Platform:
DR on Windows 10 with an NVIDIA GPU. This has been reported with DR 16.1 and 16.1.1 but likely affects earlier versions also.

Symptoms:
A number of forumites have experienced freezes/hangs when working with Blackmagic RAW footage, as soon as play is pressed in the viewer DaVinci Resolve freezes. This makes it necessary to use Windows Task Manager to End the DR Task.
UPDATE: Some are reporting no problems with BM RAW. When reporting your results, please indicate which flavor of BM RAW fails. For me, failed with BMPCC6K-Wedding sample files.
UPDATE: Further comments suggest the failure may be more likely to happen when more than one BMRAW clip being processed at once, such as during a transition between clips.

Workaround:
Turn off GPU decoding of BM RAW. Follow the pull-down menu DaVinci Resolve --> Preferences, Decode Option panel, deselect Use GPU for BM RAW Decode, then press the Save button. It will be necessary to shut down and restart DR to apply this change.

Solution for GTX 1xxx and RTX 20xx GPU cards:
For these cards, NVIDIA provides "Studio" drivers which are optimized and tested with Graphics processing software. "Studio" drivers should be used instead of "Gaming" drivers with DR. At this time, the latest Studio version driver is 441.12 and this driver version exhibits the problem. Studio driver version 431.86 or earlier version 431.70 do not have this problem and GPU decoding of BM RAW footage may be used with them.

Solution for NVIDIA cards earlier than GTX 10xx:
NVIDIA does not provide "Studio" drivers for the older GPU cards, and a "Gaming" driver must be used. NVIDIA has published a recommendation for driver version 436.48 in a recent Release Notes document.

Additional:
Hopefully this problem will eventually be sorted out between Blackmagic Design and NVIDIA.

Until then, if you want to find an earlier version of the NVIDIA driver, here is the link:

I did see this problem before I had the Studio driver installed, but since switching over I haven't seen the problem show up, thankfully.
I'm currently on 441.12 and I am not seeing the problem -- so if you're seeing it, there may be another factor involved.
I'm using a GTX 1080 Ti.

In my other thread, viewtopic.php?f=21&t=102049, I had others report that driver 441.12 exhibited the problem but driver 431.86 does not. The card types were:
--1080 Ti
--2070
--2080 Ti

Just to add to this -- it seems to be project specific. I have a project it works fine with, but I just tried to add Braw to a new project and it is locking up again.
So I can confirm this is a problem here too.

I wonder if this is what's happening to me, but it seems almost footage specific to me.

I can open other projects with BRAW footage just fine--but there is this one set of files in a project that has just recently started causing DR to crash after the latest Studio driver install.

I can open the files and play them fine in the BRAW player, too. Doesn't seem to be corrupted. I did a lot of editing on these same files/project over this past week.

Not near my work computer now, but I'll post my specs tonight or tomorrow.

Can you post one of the clips that causes the issue?

I duplicated the problem with the Wedding sample footage I downloaded from the BM product page for the BMPCC6K https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/produc ... a/workflow

I just tried all 3 clips from the website on a 1070 ti with 16.1.1 and 441.12 with no issue. Made a project, imported the clips, and could scrub through the clips.

Can you open "run" (win+r) and enter 'dxdiag', then choose "Save All Information" and send me the txt file? You can PM it to me if you would rather it be private.

DXDIAG File (why does the forum block .txt files??): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1W6ZD_1 ... sp=sharing

Keep in mind that I'm running 431.86. I'm satisfied that the failures I experienced were associated with Studio Driver 441.12 and GPU decoding switched on. I also ran an experiment with the Gaming Driver 441.12 for the possibility that NVIDIA mixed the two variations up and had the same results.

One observation I had was that Studio Driver 441.12 required me to reboot my PC as part of the installation process in order to complete it. It didn't happen when I tried the gaming version nor when I reinstalled 431.86. Nor do I remember having to reboot in the past when updating NVIDIA drivers.

This behavior has been experienced by several others as described on this thread: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=102049

3 clips? The Wedding sample footage had 11 clips with sidecar files in the download package, at least the "Camera Original" package. Maybe the other download is only 3 clips but probably is not BRAW, but I wouldn't know.

I'm using Studio 16.1.1 for Windows, P4K BRAW in Q5, GTX 1070 with Studio Driver 431.70.

All is working well with GPU decode turned on.

Okay, I did some more tests, and it's happening with more BRAW footage than I had thought. However, I can confirm that disabling GPU decoding of BRAW fixed this for me in the meantime.

The first time it happened, I was actually able to view everything in my timeline just fine, but maybe that was because I had generated optimized media? The moment I went to modify a clip via Inspector, it crashed. Maybe this is why some of my other projects seemed "fine"--these were all projects I had done work in already and I was just skimming through clips.

However, trying to edit any of them or create a new project (with the same set of clips from the source folder) caused immediate crashes.

So far, I've only tested using BRAW shot on my Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k. It crashed on:

BRAW Q0 3840 x 2160 23.976
BRAW 8:1 3840 x 2160 29.970

Please step back to the NVIDIA "Studio" driver identified in my signature and report back if that allows you to use GPU decoding.

Also, which BMPCC are you using, and firmware version if you know it? And variations in codec settings?

Can confirm that rolling back works. I'm on firmware 6.2 for the Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k, not the Pocket.

TO add to this I was getting crashes using the BMRaw player for windows after maybe 3 or 4 clips it would hang and crash. It's no longer a problem now that I have rolled back

Michael_Andreas wrote:The Wedding sample footage had 11 clips with sidecar files in the download package, at least the "Camera Original" package. Maybe the other download is only 3 clips but probably is not BRAW, but I wouldn't know.

I tested the 11 Pocket 6K clips as well with no issue on our Windows machine here. I've asked the Resolve team to try repro since we aren't able to.

Did you try making adjustments to the clips also? I could scrub through them, 3 point edit them and scrub through the timeline all ok, as soon as I put a dessolve transition between 2 clips it would crash on playback at the transition, also I could adjust colour on 2 maybe 3 clips before it would crash, nothing intense just 3 nodes on each clip.

I thought it might have been a GPU ram issue seeing as I only have 3gb but my cards were bearly being used according to devise manager when ever it crashed

Shrinivas may know something about the issue:

Wondering why so many of us are having consistent failures with the latest NVIDIA Studio driver.

Note also a few comments back that Travis Ward identified problem codecs from his Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k, firmware 6.2.

Others reported instant crashing on import, or just when playing back. I pulled clips into a timeline and played back and scrubbed the clips only.

If you have specifics steps to reproduce, please let me know.

For my system it was bmpcc4k, 4kdci, 50fps, 12:1 compression with the latest camera firmware, latest BmRaw SDK, latest nvidi drivers and latest studio version of resolve.

The only consistent way to reproduce it was the 25 frame dissolve transition between 2 clips, it crashed every single time it got to the transition

In my case, I had a stress test timeline where I'd add one-at-a-time multiple BRAW clips zoomed in to 0.2 and positioned to different locations on the screen. I had developed this with the stable driver and it works, although with 11 clips the playback drops to <5 fps which I totally understand and am not complaining about.

When I installed 441.12, after getting a report on another thread ( viewtopic.php?f=21&t=102049 ) that there were problems, I loaded the BMRAW project already established and DR locked up as soon as I tried to play the existing timeline. Switched off GPU decode and it played.

Reverted back to 431.86 and no problems since. I did another test with the gaming version of 441.12 on the off chance that NVIDIA mixed them up, got the same lockup result as with the Studio driver.

Back to 431.86 and no problem. Given the number of other people with results consistent with mine, wondering why it's working for you. Are you sure that GPU decode is switched on?

Update: I see that Sam King has provided more details. Since his happens on a transition and mine was with multiple clips, then maybe one BMRAW clip at a time is OK but fails when more are added, such as the extreme case I did or just a simple transition.

Can someone upload a problem project?
Using the supplied files on the website would be ideal. Thanks!

Here's another item that I was looking at but not ready to publish. I'm doing it now because it relates to multiple simultaneous frames being decoded by the GPU.

My other testing was done with driver 431.86. In it, I used the transform panel to make a 5x5 display of footage, sort of like a security camera. I set it up to add in one-clip-at-a-time at one-second intervals. I tried this with clips transcoded to DNxHR LB and also to JPG at various resolutions. When I ran FHD clips, with DNxHR the system would overload the CPU and playback would slow down proportionally as I added clips. But when I did the same thing with JPG, it would reach a point as another clip was added and then playback would fold back to a crawl disproportionally, the CPU and GPU would not be busy. That was with the NVDEC switched on. When I switched NVDEC off, then the playback of JPG would be a bit slower and when adding another clip reached the system limit it would slow down proportionally as you'd expect.

So I think there's something funny going on with the NVIDIA GPU decoding when it's asked to decode more than one clip at a time.

My client turned up with the final shot he shot yesterday on a BMPCC6K he bought the day before. He shot braw 3:1 (?) and yesterday I installed latest Nvidia drivers. I used Media on Resolve to identify the clips and dragged the selected clip in. Resolve immediately became sluggish then froze. I hard quit and restarted...several efforts ...system restart...then I jumped on the forum and found indications it was the new Nvidia driver. I reinstalled the previous release (¿431.86...I am not in front of it) and everything worked happily and smoothly.

Same problem, same solution on DR Studio 16.1.1.005. My PC specs are as per sig. I came home from holiday today and loaded up 187 BMPCC4K BRAW files into a new project (nearly all are Q5 4096x2160 24fps). Any attempt to view or scrub a file in the media viewer resulted in an instant freeze with the CPU showing as stuck at around 30% usage. I has to kill Resolve via Task Manager.

After several reboots and re-tries (all failed the same way) I came here and saw this thread. So I installed the earlier 431.86 Studio driver over my 441.12 and it now all works fine once again. Also, for what it's worth, I immediately noticed that the media thumbnail views loaded up much faster when on the 431.86 driver. Thanks very much to the OP for taking the time to troubleshoot this one.

Thanks. However it was someone else who figured it out, and I just took the time to verify it and write it up. I'm hopeful that with the workweek starting in the land down under that they'll be able to duplicate the issue which so many others have tripped over.

Curious how 441.12 happened to get installed on your computer since you were on holiday and 441.12 came out last weekend. Is there some automated process that installed it for you? Or are new NVIDIA drivers something you check for before you start working?

I try to keep it quiet but actually I'm a time traveller.

More boringly, I installed the Nvidia update last week some time - probably Monday as I check very frequently (plus the Geforce Experience app nags me when a new release is out). I didn't use Resolve afterwards so didn't notice any issues. I then went on a short holiday last Wednesday returning today when I opened Resolve for the first time using 441.12. Then it froze immediately trying to view BRAW footage.

Thanks. The reason for my question was whether NVIDIA driver updates could happen without a user's knowledge. I think the only way that could happen would be if another user of the computer did it.

UPDATE:

Moved from 441.x to 431.x and rendering still randomly crashes; 3% once 70% again at 46% and so on. The only way we can get DaVinci to render a video is to use the QUICK EXPORT method which provides very little customization.

So if you've moved from the latest drivers back to STUDIO Version 431.xx drivers and it still does not work, you're not alone.

Any all HELP would be greatly appreciated!

I've seen a few other reports of crashes while rendering. In order to get to the bottom of this, I would recommend that you start a new thread with an appropriate title or latch onto one of the similar existing threads. This is to get some traction with your issue.

Also, it would be very helpful if you would edit your signature via the User Control Panel to show which exact 16.x.y version of DR you're using and your hardware CPU/RAM/GPU/VRAM/GPU driver as I have done. If you have had a crash, read the TroubleShooting FAQ in the announcement section of this forum and submit logs so BMD can troubleshoot.

Can confirm I am also having this issue. For some reason driver 431.86 fails to install on my machine (will look into it). Disabling GPU decoding is frustrating as it cripples playback performance, but it'll have to do for now :( Hopefully BMD and NVIDIA get on this soon!

I understand that sometimes the NVIDIA driver has to be removed before a different version can be installed. And that for NVIDIA drivers that is done via the Apps & Features Windows Setting page.

I also have this issue.

Im using BRAW in 5:1 with the newest Studio Driver (441.12 ; 1070Ti) and i can set IN and OUT Points. But when i pull the Clips into the Timeline and play them, Resolve freeze.

Deactivate the GPU for Raw Encoding helps for me but i think that just not the way it should be ;)

NVIDIA released a new studio driver (441.28) this afternoon. However, under open issues it says
[Resolve]: The application may crash during timeline playback when using Blackmagic RAW CODEC media. [2753421]To address this issue, roll back the NVIDIA Driver to version 436.48

http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/4 ... -notes.pdf
(Driver version 436.48 would be used for pre GTX 1xxx)

The recommendations given in the OP still apply. Hopefully NVIDIA will fix this soon.

Thanks, you saved my life !
The driver was making Resolve crash totally randomly, Sometime at the opening, sometime why modyfying Project settings, sometime playing a clip, sometime at the export.

My clients just had to wait two weeks more... :?
