DR 16.1.1 crashing/locking up on app launch

Black Magic support has advised I enquire here at the forum's as I am using the free version of Davinci Resolve 16.1.1. and would apreciate any constructive advise as to a solution.

DR 16.1.1 is crashing/locking up my PC after displaying and then closing the DR splash page.
There is nothing listed in the Win 10 event viewer so I ran the batch file to produce a log.zip file of hopefully what went wrong.

Looking through the ResolveDebug.txt I looked for any entry titled ERROR or FAIL or the like and found the first error started with the SyManager.DeckLink Failed to create an instance.
After this most of the errors & warnings where related to the following:
UI
BtCommon
UI.ActionManager
UI.MenuBar
BtCommon
DbCommon2


After the crash dump a final entry
Unable to read VR Path Registry from C:\Users\David\AppData\Local\openvr\openvrpaths.vrpath

Reading those forum entries that included references to SyManager.DeckLink Failed have not pointed me to any solutions.
I have attached the full crash-dump file.
If anyone can advise as to a solution I would be great full.

Another thing to check is your GPU driver version. There have been problems with the very latest ones but the GTX 1060 is running very well with the version 431.86 Studio Driver which can be downloaded from the nvidia website.

No Decklink hardware and I have the latest driver from the Nvidia site for the 1060.
In the past:
DR v15 worked fine.
DR v16x would sometimes crash after a while.
DR v16.1.1 crashes/locks up my PC after the splash page appears and then disappears.
The PC still seems to be operating (I think) but as the USB ports all seem to close I cant get in to find out and have to try and look into the issue after rebooting my PC.

I did include everything in the install options.

I'm dumping v16 altogether and going back to v15.
Maybe v17 when it comes will be more stable.

It's still there, this is the version you want: DaVinci Resolve 15.3.1
Follow this link and scroll the 1st column down.

Be aware that the database structure between 16.x.y is different from 15.x.y. Hopefully you backed up your database before updating to 16 so it can be restored.

I suggest that you check your NVIDIA driver and use the same exact version in my signature. "Latest" is not "greatest" for DR at this time.

I thought about the database so I uninstalled DR16 and then re-installed but DR only (no keybaord or fairlight etc).

I was able to now open the application & justt in case I un-linked & deleted my existing projects thinking it may be ia version issue with the projects and then DR16 opened okay.
I thought phew finally so I created a new project on a local drive and dragged a vid file in to make sure everything was working before I started celebrating.
BUT
As soon as I entered the editor the machine froze and seconds later the USB ports all came up as unrecognised again.
After re-booting I ran the log batch file and had a look.
Nothing new as the error starts as usual with.
SyManager.DeckLink | ERROR | 2019-11-24 10:55:23,426 | Failed to create instance.

I at least was able to open the application this time so I'm guessing there where multiple issue layered issues over this issue (Keybard & fairlight most likely).

I am unsure if the editor was the cause or it just took its time to do the dirty.

I am not sure what to make of this, its as if its knocking out all of my USB ports though I see no windows logs regarding this.

Maybe look in Windows Settings , Apps & Features and see what Blackmagic Desktop Video you have. If it's there, maybe deinstalling it will help. If that doesn't work install the latest version.

Okay I don't have any Black Magic Desktop Video driver installed as I have no Black Magic hardware, should I ?

That was a double-check, that software covers the DeckLink. For some reason DR seems to be looking for it, thought the software might be installed. It also includes the Disk Speed Test.

In your OP you mentioned a missing path which includes "openvr". Do you have a VR headset? Funny thing is that I don't have that path in my set of User folders, and don't get that error. Maybe a configuration file got corrupted somewhere somehow and DR thinks you have one.

Have you tried a deinstall of DR in the Windows Settings Apps&Features ?

I have connected a USB Headphones, Mouse, Keyboard and two backup USB HDs.
No VR headset.

I downloaded v15 from that link but it requires a licence number as it is not a free version.
Is there still a free version of DR 15 available?

Both versions are there. Be careful which one you select.

Okay uninstalled 16.1.1 & re-installed 15.3.1.003 (latest free version I could find)
Locks up/crashes the instant I tried to start the DR application.
Rebooted & tried again with event viewer to see if I may log any activity.
I'm able to get the application working this time (no idea why) but Locks/crashes after I try to create a project.
Reboot
Event viewer logs: one possible reference that the WiFi being deactivated which was probably the USB ports?
CaptureLogs.bat: No changel?

I then installed DR 16.1.1 onto my old Dell Laptop but it's graphics were not up to the requirements.

Not sure what else I can do, even version 15 is displaying the same behaviour.
All other applications are working as usual only DR is failing.
I may try a friends PC & see if its just me.

Did any version of DR work on this computer at any time? If so, can you think back to any software changes, driver changes, hardware changes that have been made to the computer since it was working?

If a friend will let you install it, and it works, that should at least tell you that you're installing it properly. Would point the finger at something on your computer.

That is the problem I started using it years ago and I have no idea what precise version of v15 it was.
Certainly v16.x was crash city that got worse with every version.
I'm going to try and install on another PC to see if Its my PC or the application.
Everything else is working on my PC and I have noticed online many others have issues with DR as well.
BUT
That doesn't change the fact that many people are using DR without issue as well.
So I will continue to look as I like DR (when it works).

I think I may have solved the problem.
I've switched off the auto power control on all the USB root hubs.
I've created & edited a test vid with no problem.
Ran the Dump batch file & noticed all the errors & warnings are still there though.
So I'll keep testing before I'll say this is finally licked.

Try disconnecting your usb headphones as Resolve may be seeing them as an audio interface. Others have had problems with usb and bluetooth headphones before.

Okay performance has improved dramatically but still not there (yet).
Edited & rendered an hour plus vid & played the result with every USB port connected.
2x Ext HDs
1x USB WiFi TPLink
1x USB Hub connecting
1x Logitech Headphone
1x Ipad
1x wifi Mouse & keyboard
After some tens of minutes the USB ports switched off.
Reboot & looked and found every USB interface on Device manager & switched of the Auto PC Power setting.
Did the same and seemed to go okay.
Plan
Remove DRv15 and then install the latest DR v16 & retest until it behaves.

Okay v16.1.1 crashes minutes after being opened.
Cant find any logs as to USB ports closing.
Going to have to go back to v15 for now as I have run out of places to look.

Make sure all usb Generic and Root Hubs do not have "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" checked.
Have you rolled back your GPU driver to an earlier version? There have been problems with the most up to date version.

16.1.1 Studio frequently crashes on startup for me. It frequently happens when it tries to initialize Fairlight. I have found that it is more likely to happen if I have my ASIO interface set as my Windows default sound device. If I have my Realtek Audio device (on motherboard) set as default device it is less likely to crash.

I also don't understand why there is not an option to keep Resolve from looking for Control Surfaces on startup. I don't have one and I'd guess the majority of us here do not, so why waste time on startup?

Already done including the ones hidden under Human Interface Devices.
I think there is more than one issue here, the USB headphones being one & the USB power options the other.

I just hope that's all, more testing will tell.

Just curious does the audio issue only count for headphones?
I have only USB & HDMI ports as my workstation is actually a server.

Well purchased a new headset & the issue seems to be largely resolved (so far).
The old headset still works okay so I have no idea what DR's problem with it is.
