Guide to Getting Answers on the Forum for New Members & old

PostFri Nov 22, 2019 3:57 pm

This is intended to be a one-link reference to get new members started. Please limit comments on this thread to pointing out errors in this OP or suggesting improvements to it. For discussing technical issues, please do so on other threads.

Welcome to the forum, where users can help each other.

But to help you with your problem, we will need to understand it better. But that can be complex, as DaVinci Resolve can be used with a wide range of hardware platforms, operating systems, and peripherals such as the GPU which is heavily used by DR. DR can process numerous types of codecs from consumer-grade SD MP4s to 8K RAW. DR can apply a wide range of corrections and effects. The answer will often depend on telling us your specific usage.

So the better you can explain your problem including your hardware, software, video type, and how you're trying to use it, the better your chance of getting engagement on the forum and the better chance of being helped.

As new members to the forum are moderated for the first few messages, there will be a delay. You can utilize this delay period to read the Troubleshooting FAQ at the beginning of the forum (viewtopic.php?f=21&t=90190) which will answer some common problems. There's also a search link at the top of the page where you can enter search terms to find other threads which may identify your issues.

If you are still unable to solve your problem, please refer to this other thread for other resources and guidelines on how to report your issue here to improve your chances of being helped. <link>

************** Recent Common Issues ****************
There have been some common issues recently.
-- Crashing with BMRAW: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=102152
-- Version 16.1 crashes: Upgrade to 16.1.1 https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/suppor ... and-fusion

************* Other Resources ****************

Many issues can be solved by "reading the fine manual". Blackmagic Design has created a comprehensive User Manual which over 3000 pages long and therefore too lengthy to read, at least in one sitting. So let's call it a Reference Manual, which happens to be its title. Which means that we should refer to it as needed. How do we find the Reference Manual? Just click on the Help menu item and the drop-down menu will link to the DaVinci Resolve Reference Manual.

The Reference Manual has a table of contents but does not have an index. But an alternative is available since the Reference Manual is published as a text-searchable PDF. Just use Control-F inside the Acrobat Reader with the Reference Manual opened and type your search term. If those search terms don't work try another. If you got too many hits on your search term, you could position at the first page of the relevant chapter before doing your Ctrl-F search.

The DR Help drop-down menu also links to the DaVinci Resolve Training webpage. From this page you can download-for-free PDF and video tutorials and lesson materials for these tutorials so you can follow along.

Make sure you have a capable system. In the Support and Troubleshooting FAQ (viewtopic.php?f=21&t=90190) BM has given guidelines for system requirements, some contained in the FAQ and others referenced in a PDF. Some general and additional guidelines:
--If Windows, versions earlier than Windows 10 are not supported. Windows 7 might work for you, but if it doesn't then you're on your own.
--Minimum requirements for the GPU are 2 GB of dedicated GPU memory ("shared" memory doesn't count), but 4 GB is recommended and for UHD/4K 8 GB or more is recommended. At 2 GB you should limit yourself to 1080p timelines and you might be able to use 2160p source footage with limited corrections. Hardware accelerated decoding of h.264/h.265 is available in the paid Studio version if the GPU has at least 3.5 GB of dedicated RAM.
--Minimum requirements for RAM are 16 GB, 32 GB or more for complicated Fusion effects.
--For performance issues (eg preview stuttering/low frame rate), use of SSD or RAID0 arrays may help if you're using a single HDD. For certain codecs/bitrates, it may be necessary to use proxy/optimized media and faster media storage for the DaVinci Resolve cache as well. Use of Windows Task Manager to monitor performance may help identify bottlenecks.
In all cases, review the FAQ and the files it links carefully for the final word if given conflicting advice.

If your system Operating System and/or Hardware does not meet these requirements, then an older version of DR may work for you. Prior versions of DaVinci Resolve going back over 5 years can still be downloaded on the support page here: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/suppor ... and-fusion Scroll down the left most column "Latest Downloads" lower in the page. Earlier "free" versions may be called "Lite", if asked for a registration key then try the other type with the same version.

************* What you should tell us so that we can help you *******************

To facilitate further communication on this forum, identify your system configuration in a signature as I have done here at the bottom of this message. Your signature will be automatically attached to each comment you leave on the forum, so others will not have to hunt through the forum to find information left in an old comment in order to help you. To edit your signature, in the upper left corner of this web page is a link to your User Control Panel, select Profile tab and Edit Signature panel. Identify the following in your signature:
--Version of DaVinci Resolve, Studio or Free, and the exact version and build number. In DR, follow the menu DaVinci Resolve --> About DaVinci Resolve and copy the number from the pop-up panel.
--Operating System and version
--CPU
--System RAM size
--GPU Card model with GPU Memory Size and GPU Driver version
--Type of Storage Drive for DaVinci Resolve project files and cache. If you don't know where your cache is, it's probably on your C: drive.

In your comment, describe the type of codecs/resolutions/frame rates you were using and what corrections/effects/etc you were attempting.

If you had a crash, provide the crash logs by the method given in the FAQ linked above. If you had other behavior, provide the best description you can so that it can be reproduced. In some cases, it may be helpful to give sample clips of source footage or other data via a file sharing service such as Dropbox or Google Drive. If you are new to the forum, you may need to insert a space in the URL to get past the Forum filter as new members are not allowed to post URLs.
