Convert Timeline to Multicam

PostMon Nov 25, 2019 9:54 pm

Hi there,

I have a project that required manual syncing of the four cameras and audio recorded from an audio desk. I have synced each angle and layered them on a seprate track each so I have four Video Tracks and Two Audio Tracks.
I'd now like to perform a multicam edit of this footage.
I tried creating a dummy multicam sequence and replacing the footage by copying and pasting the correct footage but that didnt work.

Is what I want to do possible?

Cheers

You need to follow the Create Multicam process with your source media. Open the created Multicam clip in a temporary timeline and if the syncing isn't proper you can slide the clips back and forth, then return to the media page and Create New Timeline with the adjusted multicam.

This thread has a general guide to resources including a link to free tutorials on how to work with Multicam footage: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=103131

I've written so much and often about that I will be short here : it should work.

The technique : make any fake multicam with 2 clips > put it on the a timeline > right click this multicam clip and choose "open in timeline" > copy and paste here all your synced stacked clips > close this open timeline by double-clicking its name at the bottom left corner.
Then activate the multicam view in the viewer...

In version 17, you can.

Jim,
I think the question being asked may be the same as I am asking on another thread. I have created a manually synced timeline after attempts at automatically syncing it by a couple of methods failed. Are you saying that there is a way of taking that timeline into a multicam timeline without moving the clips? If so, can you tell me how?
thanks

Hey,
Finally came here, to read this burried thread again...
Yes of course, in 17 Resolve adopted the FCP7/Premiere way.
However, in the video above, the Resolve 16 way is the way I suggested (at Resolve 15 time), no difference, therefore not "faster". Only what Resolve allow is...

If you're using the 17 beta, go to Help>Reference Manual. A relatively short PDF will come up detailing all the new features in 17, including the new Multicam features.

Fantastic news! I had missed that feature from PP. Is DaVinci Resolve 17.1 Public Beta stable? Or wait for the final release?
Thank you!

17.1 is for the new Mac hardware. I don't know about that.

The current Beta 7 is working pretty well for me. However, my work is still pretty much shut down, so I'm in play mode. No deadlines to miss if something doesn't work.

What I got following Kenzo's suggestion is a multicam timeline that could be edited in the Edit page using a mouse to action the camera cuts. It didn't place anything in the sync bin however so it couldn't be edited in the Cut page using the Speed Editor. It would still be useful therefore for Black Magic to allow a manually synced timeline to be ingested into the sync bin without moving any of the clips.

Yeah, Sync Bin and Multicam are two entirely different operations.

So is it fair to say that if I don't have timecode, then using the speed editor in the cut page is impossible??? :o

I'll be seriously sad if that is true!

I know this is an old thread, but I’m having an issue related to this process that may be helpful to know.
I’ve recently been using the Timelines Bin that Resolve offers to automatically store created timelines in (Project Settings > General Options > Color > “Use timelines bin”). I thought it’d be nice just so I know it’ll always be at the top of the list and easily accessible.
However I’ve been unable to convert a timeline with my aligned clips to a multicam clip, as the option does not show up.
Has anyone else ran into this issue? I’ve went through the steps multiple times just to make sure I’m not missing something, but I suspect it may be an issue with this Timelines Bin tool.

EDIT: I just opened a new project without the Timelines Bin active and I’m now able to convert the timeline to a multicam clip. So if this is an issue with Timelines Bin, it’d be nice if it was fixed.

Convert to multicam is missing when using timeline bin.
You can convert it by using the following workaround:

Go to the Preferences -> User -> Editing and make sure "Smart bin for timelines" is enabled.
Open the Smart Bins panel -> Timelines, find the timeline and convert it to multicam from there

There is also a feature request here for timeline bin improvements:
