Radeon VII problem with KVM

PostWed Dec 25, 2019 7:35 pm

I just took delivery of a Radeon VII. I need to run its Displayport output through an IOgear GCS1932 KVMP Displayport UHD switch. Problem is that it only works through the switch at 30Hz, not 60Hz. At 60Hz the image flashes off and on - mostly off. My nVidia cards work through the switch at 60Hz, no problem. And the Radeon works when the switch is bypassed.

Anyone dealt with the same issue or have an idea if there are settings to get the Radeon to work at 60Hz through the switch? Otherwise back it goes?

Hi.

The first thing I will like to ask you is, if you are using it with the lastes version of the firmware?

Indeed I am. Also the most recent version of the Radeon drivers. I also tried the previous version with no difference.

The only thing I can think of trying is to check the 60Hz timings with the NVidia card and try to create a custom resolution to match in the AMD control software. I'll report back.

Hi.

I tried to google 'radion GCS1932' and found this link:

https://forum.level1techs.com/t/display ... ues/127955

QUOTE Wendell:
'You’d be surprised how many dp cables out there are crap. We will have some cheap but excellent cables on l1 soon. Try those.

I’ve also found some devices like 2013 mac pros spew way out of spec signals. Which wreak havoc with the l1 kvm. The fix is an active repeater with edid injector/corrector. I am prototyping those but I doubt there is much of a market for them and I’d have to sell them for around $50 each w/o a power adapter (USB for power works fine)'

And:

'The linux amdgpu driver is pretty verbose about dp link failures and other dp weirdness. That’s something. Other than that it’s hard to do much without some basic equipment'

I don't know what quality your DP cable's are or how long?
Or if you use any kind of adapters?

And his other suggestion is, if you have tried to run it from Linux, just to get one step further?

Regards Carsten.

Hey Carsten,

Thanks for your help. I also thought it might be the DP cable and experimented with another with a bit less instability at 60Hz. The knowledgeable guy at XFX support didn't think it was the cable if it worked fine with the 1080ti but I even ordered a DP1.4 cable off Amazon. Then I decided to try running my 35 minute C4k timeline in Resolve with the UI at 30 Hz. Turned out resolve didn't much care that the UI was 30Hz but my timeline playback sure cared that it was trying to do everything in real time in OCL that it had managed with CUDA, Things like playback of a 4k mp4 cutting to a 6k 96fps R3D was not smooth as Resolve was clearing straining to debayer and decompress the R3D and the MP4. Some transforms on large stills played jerkily, and Smooth Cuts needed to be cache rendered, which, with Smooth Cuts, for some strange buginess, Resolve didn't manage to do correctly. After it crashed twice on an MP4 with IS and Color Stabilizer, that ran perfectly fine in real time in CUDA, I decided that OCL is not for me and my system and my project. I cancelled the DP4 cable and am returning the card.

I also am seeing a lot less GPU Full errors after reverting to nVidia driver 431.86
