Crashing During Render - Problem in Studio or just in Free?

PostFri Jan 17, 2020 5:32 pm

Yesterday was my first experience editing on DaVinciResolve, I was very impressed until I tried to export.

I spent four or five hours trying everything suggested on the forums, going over my configuration etc. I'm trying again as I type this at 10fps. But frankly, if that is what it takes, then this is not a viable solution for me.

I feel like a jerk complaining about a free product. Ya get what you pay for right?

I was impressed enough with the little editing I did that I'd gladly cough up $300 to get a version that actually works.

But that is the question.. Does it work? Is there a money-back guarantee?

I'd hate to pay $300 and still not be able to export videos.

Studio does offer GPU processing not available in the Free version. Whether or not that applies to you, and would help, depends on your media and export settings and...to be honest...pure chance.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I'm not aware of any differences in the render engine between Studio and free other than the range of codecs and resolution supported.

Nice to see the info in your signature. One item missing is your NVIDIA driver version, in case you didn't notice during your research on the forum are recommendations to use NVIDIA's "Studio" version 431.86 if you're having render issues. The later version to try is "Studio" 441.66, versions between these two have had issues with BRAW processing.

Another suggestion to change the CPU priority setting: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=97542#p586312

I have not yet committed to the driver because nothing that I have done has let me get out a render. I'm up to about 12 hours trying to render an 80 minute piece with 4 edits, no effects.

I moved back to 431.86 Nvidia (from whatever was the latest) I also tried DR 16.0 and even the last vesion of 15 (but then I could not find the project I had created in the newest version.)

I will now try the cpu priority setting. I had not done that.

If that doesn't work, I think I may just have to give up in DR which is too bad because I bought this brand new computer specifically to run DR.

Though I think it will probably give me a better experience if I am force to bail on DR and go back to Premiere.

Studio adds the ability to render H.264/5 using the GPU, whereas Free will only use the CPU and OS Libraries.

They're technically two different engines.

Certainly didn't help us. 16.1.2 is a train wreck.

I am officially throwing in the towel on this software. It seemed so promising but I cannot get it to work and even if I did it looks like 5 hours to render an 80min project?? Insane.

You seem to be posting this comment on a lot of threads... don't worry, we heard you the first time.

Just go back to versino 15.3 and you'll have no crashes. As I said in a different thread... by staying one full version behind I've been able to use Resolve Studio for two years without a single crash... at all, ever!

Stop being so cutting edge and your problems will melt away :-)

So If I started a project in DR 16, is there a way to open it in DR 15?

DR 15 will not read DR 16 databases. You might be able to export your DR 16 project to another common format like EDL and then import the EDL into DR 15. But I've never done that and you'll have to read up in the manual on that.

I've been dealing with render crashing all week here. When I downgraded from 16.1.2 to 16.1.1, it went away and started working. Of course I'm on studio, not free, but give a downgrade a try.
